| What should I expect from a Groomer? Gabby (my 7 lb. Yorkie) came into my life in July. She is 7 years old. She used to be a show dog. She instantly bonded to me. She won’t let me out of her sight. She has long hair. It is getting a little to much for me. If I don’t comb her twice a day, she gets knots. I called a local groomer and asked if I could stand about 10 feet away so Gabby could see me. I knew if she could see me, then she would be fine for the grooming. The groomer said”no”. Some stuff about insurance wouldn’t allow me there. I think it’s crap. She then told me she thought it would be best if I left her off and then picked her up. Gabby’s hair is about 9 inches long. I wanted the groomer to cut about 5 inches off and leave about 4 inches. She said to do that would take about 4 hours and she couldn’t do it. If I wanted Gabby’s hair cut it would have to be with clippers and the clippers left about an inch. I’ve never had any experience with a groomer before. Would anyone expect you to just leave a 2 or 3 year old child and come back and pick them up. Or would they not cut a childs hair the way you wanted it. Does this all sound reasonable to you. Please help me to understand these things. |

| I just relocated from NY to CO. My groomer in NY let us stay and watch. I just visited a new groomer here in CO to check it out and asked the same thing..can I stay while you groom her? They said no. I said "doesn't work for me..no thank you". I am sure I will find a good groomer here that is more reasonable, as the price of a grooming isn't cheap. |

| I stand with the groomer as he grooms the dogs. I wouldn't leave mine.

| I think she's full of it. I wouldn't leave my dog with a groomer... Especially one I had just met. And FOUR hours? Geesh. It shouldn't take that long! I would find a different groomer.

| I think the relationship between a client and a groomer has to something special. They are dealing with a living breathing baby that means the world to you They must handle with care! I believe you should have trust in your groomer to know that he/she will treat your baby as special as you do, to know If something did happen, they would know who to contact and they would know what to do to protect your baby. If for some reason you do not feel this way about your groomer, I would look around until you do. They are out there, you just have to look! I don’t think there is anything wrong with leaving your baby there- it comes down to if you trust the groomer or not. My groomer is amazing, but she is always busy. I will drop Peanut off at my lunch and pick him up after work.. Working full time and trying to schedule a grooming apt is not an easy task- I don’t like to schedule him for Sat bc she is super swamped, so leaving him there for a couple hours works for me.. When I pick him up every time he is in the same crate with a little water and the food I leave him, he has a little bed and he is always super happy! I have full confidence he is taking care of when he is there.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I can understand them not wanting you there during grooming. Mine get too excited and fussy when they see me. But it may be different with an experienced show dog. However, not knowing how to leave 4 or 5 inches of hair shows inexperience. I'd look for another groomer.

| I would talk to a few different groomers. I think the groomer you talked to may not be the best groomer by the sounds of it.

| Our groomer does let people leace dogs all day, its convient for some who work etc. However she operates like my hair dresser, an apointment time I stay. Heck my groomer has coffee cookies and magazines in her wait area, prefers people stay....eait area also is a mini shop...dog comes in fets groomed owner stays and shops Giant window to watch how she and her staff handle your baby too.

| As far as the cut...if she is yelling you sge's not capable of giving the cut you want...she already said it, sge's not capable, at least she is honest right away.

YT 500 Club Member | Im in college and I take my dog to the groomer and let her stay. The ladys are very sweet and treat the dogs like their own. You can go in there and tell them what kind of haircut you want but they will only do it if the dog allows them to. They are really sweet and I love them. They will work with my class hours and will keep her til I get out of class. I guess its more about finding a groomer you trust. |

| My neighbor uses a mobile groomer that comes right to her house, grooms the dogs right at the kitchen table, does any cut she is asked to do AND, obviously, lets "mom" stay.

| I visited a couple of different groomers until I found one that I liked. The fact is that groomers have no regulation. In most states there is no qualification to be a groomer. Anyone can pick up the clippers and start a "grooming" business. The chain store grooming places take people off the street and train them at the store or send them to their own class for a few hours then turn them loose as a "groomer." I would never leave my baby at a groomer that I did not know. Many groomers only know how to bathe and shave. Sadly, that is all many owners want. They let their dog go until they are extremely unpleasant looking and then take them to have their fur cut down. I stayed with my girl the first couple of times she went to her present groomer. When I was sure she was in a good trust worthy environment I started leaving her but only for the time it takes to have her groomed which is no more than an hour and a half. If a groomer does not make you and your dog comfortable and refuses to do the type of cut you want then keep on going until you find one that will. The person you describe sounds like she probably is a bathe and shave "groomer." They rake in the money by giving a dog a bath and running some clippers all over the dog. It takes no skill or experience. You could do that yourself. I guess that is why many people have resorted to doing their own grooming. |

| A really big bill..... be really careful and tell them to get their hands off your dogs anal glands, they should not touch them unless your vet has advised your dog has issues Some give a little sedative if the dogs are anxious so check about that and be very careful and check them out and get references from friends |

| every groomer is different so I would keep checking until you found one that was accommodating. I used to leave my past yorkies with the groomer I still use now, the dogs were fine and most of the time the hair was cut the way I wanted, but not always. Now I stay but since this is not her norm I go at the end of the day when she is wrapping up. I also wash, dry and brush Lola first. I sit right next to her at the grooming table and even sometimes hold Lola's head. My groomer is an owner operated shop and she is the only one there, I doubt a place like petco would allow it. Some dogs act up a lot less when the owner is not present so that is one of the reasons they like the owner to be gone, my last yorkie was a nightmare for me to groom, he barked, jerked his head around, tried to bite me, but he was a lamb at the groomers, I would never have sat with him during the grooming. The other reason they often don't want you there, is some work assembly line style, they bathe a bunch of dogs, then put them in cages with hair dryers attached while they work on the next dog, so it might be an hour or longer in between bath and hair cut. When I sit with her I know she takes longer on Lola so I pay a little more, which is fine by me. Your other option like someone suggested it to use a mobile groomer, but many do it in their van so make sure you find out if you can sit in. Good luck and let us know what finally happens
