| cant groom my yorkie Maggie will be 3 this November and shes not even potty trained yet. I know VERY bad, and I feel bad for it, but im trying now. I know its harder as they get older and its my mistake. I would take her out as a puppy but she never stuck to going outside. Giving her a bath is as bad as brushing or cutting her. When I give her a bath I soak her and spray her with the hose think from the sink. I got so mad at her one day and I was screaming at her and hit her, and trust me I wanted to later kill myself for it. I cried for days because I felt so bad, and now i know i will never do that EVER again. I don't know if theres anything I can do to make her like it more. ive tryed showering with her, and it doesn't seem to help all the much, a little bit. I cant even brush her paws, thats like opening a can of hell. what can I do?? also different question, but i feel like she hates me, i sometimes forget to let her out and walk her, althought starting tomorrow shes gonna get daily walks, and be let out. I feel like she hates me and will never love me again, what should I do? |

Try being friends with her. Give her treats when she does or even tries to do what you would like. For the bath, try turning the water pressure down, or use a cup and pour water over her, slowly. Some dogs don't like standing in water... it can make them nervous. And medium warm water temperature. Give her treats as your work on her. If you start to loose your temper, stop whatever you're doing, and take a break until you calm down. She won't learn if you're upset. Tell her she's a 'good girl' alot, especially right before bed, no matter what happened that day, and give her a hug and a kiss goodnight. Tomorrow is another day, and another opportunity to do right. She'll learn to trust you and will forgive you. I give you credit for admitting the error in your ways, and for wanting to make it right. She'll be your best friend in time. Have patience with her and yourself. For housetraining, get her on a schedule, and stick to it. Reward her with praise and a treat when she potties in the right place. You must ignore any mistakes, just clean it up... it's not her fault. So no scolding, she'll think 'going potty' is bad, not where she went potty. My Peek A Boo came to live with me at 5 years old, and he did not care for people too much. It took 8 months to prove to him that I loved him, and for him to accept me. As soon as I mentally accepted him for what and how he was, I saw improvements in his behavior. When I started telling him he was a 'Good Boy', he started getting happy, which made me happy, and soon we became best friends.

around her face gets really icky, and sometimes she crys when i try to brush there.. any way to make the stuff softer so it wont hurt her? I feel like me and maggie still are best friends, whenever i get up she follows me, she always wants to sit with me. I even made her stairs leading up to my bed! i know shes not scared of me because she lets me touch her, and shes never bit me or showed aggression to me. I will work on the time thing tomorrow! she will go outside, so thats not the problem, its not letting her out and having her go in the house thats the problem. but i am going to set alarms on my phone when to being her out, and give her a walk everynight before bed! | |

| hi, i am so sorry you are going through a rough time . do you know anyone that is experienced at dog grooming who can give some help. like someone else said it is very important to remain calm because she can feel your tension and it will make her act out more. just do a little at a time. Till she is more comfortable with it. has she ever seen a professional groomer? maybe if you could find one in your area you feel comfortable with it would help. ps, i am not judging you at all but hitting or yelling of any kind will not help ok. it just will make her afraid of you.... | You can use human eye wash or Natural Tears on the eye gunk. I usually apply a few drops, then brush out the body while I wait for the gunk to soften up. I may have to apply more drops and wait longer till it softens up. I use a Q-tip or cotton ball to wipe the hair clean once the gunk is softened. That is a very sensitive area... I don't know too many dogs that can tolerate having it brushed out dry. You can use the eye wash a few times during the week also to prevent it from building up too much. If you warm it up a bit it may work quicker. You can also use Opthalmic antibiotic ointment (from your vet or online) in her eyes, it can help lessen the amount of eye gunk coming out of the eye, and will keep it softer and protect the hair and skin around the eye. For a dry coat/skin, I use a creme rinse or conditioner as a final step of a bath. I apply quite a lot and work it in really well with my hands, like a massage. I leave it on her for 3-5 minutes, then rinse it out. Then I use a leave-in conditioner spray when I comb out the coat, even when I comb/brush out everyday during the week. That takes care of any dryness I've come across. I wash my dogs every 1-2 weeks. For pottying, try every 2 hours to begin with. Look for any signals she may give that indicate she has to 'go'. Keep her in the same room you are in, so you will see her, and she can't go off somewhere and sneak a potty in the house. As she becomes more dependable, increase the amount of time between potties. You have to retrain her bladder to be able to 'hold it' for longer periods of time, which takes time and practice. I use a kitchen timer when I have other projects I'm working on, bc I do lose track of time quite often, and the timer is a good way to make me remember to let them out. Cheese can be rich and can fill them up. I use Cheerios or Gerber's Graduates Puffs for training treats... They love the crunch and can eat a ton of them without filling up... You could also try walking her right before a bath... might wear her out a little bit and make bathtime go smoother.

| I pick the eye gunk out a couple of times a day with my finger so it doesn't build up. My hubby thinks its gross but Iv done worse for my skin kids lol. I used a basin of water and a face cloth to begin with on my girls I put the shampoo in the water and washed then down with the cloth squeezing it over the back until they were wet through. Once the got used to that I started standing them in the basin and pouting water from a cup over them avoiding the face now after a few months I can use a shower spray. It took time to build up their confidence. Sounds like you have some troubles of your own. It's good to hear your wee girl is a comfort to you too. Great idea putting timers on your phone. I use mine too to remind me to give mess and stuff. Good luck and don't give up. You are both worth the effort.

I realize you're only 16, but I honestly think you need more help than what an online forum can offer.

I would suggest, as you don't bath her that often, that you save up and GO to a professional groomer once a month or so. And no, I have never hit my children - and I certainly wouldn't dream of hitting Harry - a larger Yorkie but who is still only a speck in comparison to me.... And again - no, everyone doesn't hit there dogs from time to time to get them to stop. My hands are actually shaking as I'm typing this.... Quote:

But hitting your dog is so wrong on so many levels. This just hurts my heart.

Please don't feel that you have to defend yourself to any posters that have not answered your question of how to make bathtime easier on your dog. You explained yourself thoroughly in your original post. I neglected to mention grooming the feet. They get knots and mats on their feet that can be very painful when one tries to brush them out.(another very tender area) If you are going to try, be very gentle with her and give her alot of breaks. It may be best to go to a professional groomer and have any mats shaved off, rather than trying to do it yourself, then start brushing her daily to prevent it from happening again. Using alot of conditioner in the bath and during brushing will also help keep mats away. Always end your grooming sessions with her on a positive note, and give her a treat. Don't try to get it all done in one session either... sometimes it takes me 4-5 days to get a dog completely brushed out, I do a little bit each day. I think you can turn this around, just be patient with her and yourself. PS: You can have this thread 'closed' anytime by PMing Admin or a Moderator.
