| Nipping strangers (non-family) Help :o( Mickey goes crazy jumping and barking when people enter our house or I am taking him out for a walk. They are gated off in a big section of the house. If the people get in range he will nip them. He has not hurt anyone badly but he "nips" them in his excitement. Especially if they reach at him. This has got to stop! He got this protective issue at about a year and he is now 2. He is so gentle and sweet with the inner family. I think he thinks he needs to protect us. How can I stop him from wanting to nip people he sees as a threat????? I can't have him nipping people. Luckily it has not been bad enough that we have been sued. I did have to show his shot record to a neighbor. I don't know what to do.............. Please help us

| I am sorry , the only advice i have is to see a reputable dog trainer as soon as you can. Ask your vet first if they don't know any try petsmart or petco. You are right , you do not want your dog biting anyone. It could lead to the loss of your dog. I am so glad that you recognized you have a problem and want to take care of it. Good luck to you.. |

| I've been researching and it seems Mickey has Territorial and Protective Aggression. BTW he does not act like this in situations like the vet or a trip to the Pet Store. He acts much more submissive there.

| I'm not an official trainer so I hope someone with experience training other people's dogs can help you. I would suggest that maybe you bring one person in at a time and give him a chance to meet a new person while on a leash and under your control. Most Yorkies love people but can be excitable under certain circumstances. Meeting someone one on one and giving him a chance to calm down may help to start to socialize him. Someone coming into the home that he is not used to can cause his protective instinct to go bananas. Give him a chance to calm down and meet the person sitting down but with you holding his leash. This may need to be repeated several times to get the reaction you want. |

| Well, it may show that he is just highly excitable with new conditions and people. He just needs to take things slowly. I don't think he really wants to hurt anyone. Sometimes they will try to grab hold of someone when they want to get them to stay still. My Gracie used to do the same when company would come. She was so excited to see new people that she would just act crazy. I had to put her on the leash and make her mind until she calmed down. It takes time but you have to be consistent and make him sit in order to get attention. Don't reward bad behavior but reward him when he sits and lets people meet him calmly. |
