Argh! Korea Groomers! Ok long story short... Currently we live in S. Korea, my husband works for the DOD here. We got our Lucy when she was 2 months old from a soldier who didn't complete his papers on time and couldn't PCS with the puppy. We inevitably fell in love with our little girl as soon as we saw her, he didn't know a lot from the breeder he got her from and we really didn't care as long as she was a healthy puppy. Lucy is 8months now and she is precious to us, part of our family my son and husband just adore her. We are fine with the fact she doesn't have the silkiest coat, we've bought the Chris Christensen shampoos for her and she looks gorgeous when we bath and comb her. As for Korea groomers..... I rather have a professional to cut her hair, the first time I took her to the groomers, I went to pick her up and she was shaved entirely she was shaking and shivering like a leaf, my poor baby was cold. I thought they didn't understand me but I swear I was not going to take her to the same groomer again. Three months later, her hair finally grows back but really needed some style and I searched for better doggy salons near our area. Two of the groomers wanted to shave her AGAIN! Fortunately I was not letting her until I got my point across of no shaving I nearly went into an argument with one of the Korean groomers over this . Finally I did found one that was willing to just bath and trim her hair and she looks so beautiful BUT...he didn't let me go without telling me that next time is better to shave her. Of course I'm willing to hear any groomers recomendation, but why the need to shave? In Korea is their way or no way...for everything. Her hair is not that bad! Anyway I think I will have to learn how to cut her hair, I bet is not that difficult. Time to get me some safety tools for that and start watching videos. Sorry for the rant, I really needed to get it out of my chest. Can't say all Korean groomers are bad but didn't feel the 4 I've visited so far have the knowledge and skills to style the doggy's.

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | welcome to YT....as far as the groomers suggesting that its better for her to be shave down instead, if you don't mind me asking, is she matted really bad when you take her in? do you brush her daily to make sure she is not badly matted? because if they get really matted then the best thing to do is shave them and start over....i recently had to shave one of my girls down and getting ready to shave another...because i their hair is badly matted on their legs and around their neck and part of their body...mostly due to my own fault of slacking on their brushing...so i shaved off the hair on their legs and body...keeping their face and tail so that i can regrow it out...they don't have silky hair so letting a mat go unattended for a few days can really turn bad... here is a picture of Ting Ki who I just shaved down...with her having such thick cottony type hair i may just continue to keep her body shaved but let her leg hair grow in and keep the hair on her tail, face and head growing with the leg hair.

I love the shaved body. I had Coral done because she loves to wear sweaters and her hair was so silky that it would mat. She was very comfortable with the shaved body. And with all the clothes she wore you really couldn't tail.

That is a shame about the shave. I have NOTHING against groomers, everyone needs to make a living doing what they enjoy. But I have cut my Yorkies' hair myself for 23 total dog-years. By that I dont mean divide total years by 7 (human years vs "dog years" you used to hear about), I mean take the number of Yorkies you have/have had, add up the total years they have/are living with you; so that's a lot of hair cuts! I prefer the traditional schauzer look, I suppose its a puppy cut. It's not that hard to achieve, but you do have to be careful, particulary around the eyes and be sure and avoid the strechy skin in back of the legs that often is obscured by hair. I actually nipped this behind one leg on my first Yorkie before I knew any better. That was many years ago and I have not had any accidents since. If your Yorkie is very high strung and spazzy, recommend you get a trusted assistant (like your husband) to help. With our spazzy dog Daisy, one of us has to cover her eyes while we cut around them, its not that hard but if she can see, she nips or jerks away, which is very dangerous around the eyes. As long as you have an assistant as necessary, however, I dont think the risks of home grooming are unmanageable in the least, and all you need is scissors (need to get the safety kind with rounded ends), a brush and maybe a dog comb.

I have no idea about Korea but I know it is popular to shave them down here as well. Many dog owners only take their dog to a groomer when they are such a mess they have to be shaved. (I'm not talking Yorkie owners but people with any longer haired breed) I have always loved the long flowing coat of the little long haired breeds and I have always kept my little one's fur long.......unless a groomer decided to do as they pleased with my pet. It's a shame that you have to almost bribe a groomer not to shave down your pet. I really think it is because most pet owners don't have time to comb their pet daily and they can become a mess if you don't keep up with it. I comb my girl at least once a day and usually twice and I use a conditioning spray between baths. It takes only minutes because doing it daily prevents mats. I have finally found a groomer that knows how to groom a long haired Yorkie. I only have to take her once every two or three months because I do the up keep between groomings. I basically only need the groomer to even off her skirt and frame around her face for me. I'm terrible at that part.

Thank you for the replies guys. Yesterday chatting with a friend who owns a Yorkie-boy and has been longer than us here told me that to shave is the norm. Her baby boy has the silkiest hair and has been shaved before without her consent as well. The Schnauzer cut is the most popular and like so many other businesses here in Korea the professionalism of the "groomers" is questionable. "Remember, this is a country where dogs are on the menu". A sad reminder. I comb Lucy everyday, she does get some tangles under her legs but nothing some little patience can't solve. Is not that I hate to shave her I would if that's the better choice but it's really not at this time, it's really cold right now. Besides, back home really good groomers get all kinds of challenging cases and they put their skills to work. Just to bath and shave every single doggy is just being lazy and the service is not cheap either. Maybe in the bigger cities like Seoul they have better choices for pet owners, I will still be looking for a place where I feel she's treated with TLC and that I could recommend in the future. But in the meantime I will follow your advice to partner up with hub and cut her hair when needed. Here a picture when she was shaved the first time and a picture of her now.
