That is a shame about the shave. I have NOTHING against groomers, everyone needs to make a living doing what they enjoy. But I have cut my Yorkies' hair myself for 23 total dog-years. By that I dont mean divide total years by 7 (human years vs "dog years" you used to hear about), I mean take the number of Yorkies you have/have had, add up the total years they have/are living with you; so that's a lot of hair cuts!
I prefer the traditional schauzer look, I suppose its a puppy cut. It's not that hard to achieve, but you do have to be careful, particulary around the eyes and be sure and avoid the strechy skin in back of the legs that often is obscured by hair. I actually nipped this behind one leg on my first Yorkie before I knew any better. That was many years ago and I have not had any accidents since. If your Yorkie is very high strung and spazzy, recommend you get a trusted assistant (like your husband) to help. With our spazzy dog Daisy, one of us has to cover her eyes while we cut around them, its not that hard but if she can see, she nips or jerks away, which is very dangerous around the eyes. As long as you have an assistant as necessary, however, I dont think the risks of home grooming are unmanageable in the least, and all you need is scissors (need to get the safety kind with rounded ends), a brush and maybe a dog comb.
