| Stress and traveling.... Cooper turned two years old in November. We've had our ups and downs and he's overcome all his hip problems. He's even house broken!! The last few weeks when we travel on Fridays he's just freaking out. I had him on Reconcile for a while and I thought we'd worked through all this. He's been off that for at least 6 months. He shakes all over and pants, loudly. I don't know why he's so scared or stressed, he has lived half his life traveling in a car. Can anyone point me in a helpful direction? He was last at the vet in late Oct. and had no apparent health problems. It's stressful to me too trying to drive and watching him basically quiver all over. This is nothing new to him at all. I don't understand what's going on with him. |

| Taz doesn't have that problem but recently over the Holidays I've noticed he does have a bit of anixety in the car. It could be that your baby isn't getting enough time out of the car. I would try sitting him in the backseat and placing a dark throw over his crate. Also make sure he's hydrated and fed. I also noticed when the music is too loud or if the window is down it may irritate them a little more. Hope this helps.

| Thanks for your advice. I've done all that, but he continues to stress. Crating, blankets over the crate, walking at rest stops, water. He refuses all of it. Like I said before, he's spent long hours in the car since I got him at 5 months old. It's nothing new. I listen to audio books, so I can't imagine that would be stressing him, it's not heavy metal cranking through the speakers. |

| Do you think he would maybe do better in a booster car seat that lets him be able to see out the window. Some people here have also used rescue remedy I haven't but here is the link Why RESCUE Remedy® Pet? - Nelsons USA. Other then those two suggestion the only thing else I can think of is talking to your vet about something.

| Sounds like I may need to get the tranquilizers she was talking about to give him before a forecasted thunderstorm, fireworks, etc. I hate to see him like that. We went with the Reconcile because he was just nervy all the time. He seems to have come out of that. Now it's just in the car. |

| I will. I'm not sure "tranquilizer" was the right term. A sedative. When I hear tranquilizer I think a dart gun or just being knocked out. Last edited by Cooper2010; 01-07-2012 at 07:22 PM. |

| Yoshi used to get that way and after trying Benedryle we tried Hydroxizine and it works wonders..We found that out b/c he was taking the Hydroxizine for allergies but it works well for anxiety too. I do know what you are going through and I hope you get it all worked out.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Sometimes Thor seems very stressed in the car, and sometimes not. I THINK it's basically if he's familiar with the route we're taking. Are you driving to the same place, or a different place every time? It's possible he had a bad experience after a car ride, and now fears he'll have the same experience again (maybe after getting driven to the vet?). This is tangential, but no matter how calm Thor is on the drive, he completely loses it when we park. Every. Single. Time. He shrieks and wails and shakes like a leaf until I take him out. He goes to doggy daycare, and he is one of the last stops on the way home. The staff says he wigs out every time they stop the van. When I go out to get him, I can hear him from half a block away. Gee, my dog is crazy!

| I promise I'm not being nosey - but what happens on a Friday? Is it always to the same destination - and what happens when you get there? I'm only asking because Harry is as quiet as a mouse in the car - every single day apart from Thursdays!!! I've realised that it's actually anticipation - I'll have taken my mum for coffee (all quiet) then grocery shopping (again, all quiet) - but then it'll be on the drive home towards her house that all hell breaks loose. There is absolutely nothing I can do to quieten him down. He knows that once he gets there and the shopping's in - he'll have his walk, have his lunch, and then run in the garden. They are so clever - built in sat-navs and creatures of habit - I wonder if this might have anything to do with your problem? Sally + Harry x |
