| help! Breeder says yorkie.. what do you think? Hi everyone! I've been a long time reader but this is my first post. Sorry for posting another one of the "is this a yorkie?" posts but this has been driving me nuts and googling hasn't helped. I own a 7 month old yorkie named Carter who I ABSOLUTELY ADORE. He loves to play so we got him a little sister to play with. Here's the thing: we've had her two days and I'm wondering if she truly is a yorkie. The breeder said she is 100% yorkie but her fur is course and a lot shorter than Carter's was at her age. Her face reminds me of a racoon mixed with a fox...not the typical yorkie face. I think she has a longer nose. Her personality is very loud. I can't tell if she is playing with Carter or actually being mean and aggressive. She already barks loud and like crazy even though she's only 13 weeks. She weighs 2.9 lbs. The breeder said the parents both weigh 5 lbs. She has not received any shots nor has she been dewormed (2 things that concern me about how reputable the breeder is). The breeder said she had both parents on site but we were looking at multiple dogs and she met us in a more convenient location so we never saw the parents. I dont know if im just expecting all yorkies to be similar to Carter or if we got ripped off. Let me know what you guys think! The 3 pictures attached are of Bella and my profile picture is Carter. Thanks SO much for your help! |

| I dont see a picture of carter but I will tell you yorkies have different coat textures, weight, muzzle length etc. No two are exactly alike but if more breeders were breeding to the standard they would be more alike thats the problem.

| Bella is definately a cutie and looks just alike a yorkie to me! My ZoE's hair was shorter and slightly coarser than other yorkie puppies at the time, and she never looked "fluffy" as so many other yorkie pups do. Now at almost a year old she has a silky coat that is very easy to take care of and rarely mats. I love her coat!

| Looks like a Yorkie to me. I've had two yorkies and neither looked the same. If you paid a lot and are worried, did you buy from a reputable breeder? Do you have papers? Love comes in many shapes, sizes and forms. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Some breeders advocate not starting vaccinations until at least 10-12 Weeks of age due to research suggesting that vaccines are not effective prior to this time. Deworming is also controversial. Hopefully you have already taken her to the vet to make sure she is healthy. 2.9 pounds at 13 weeks puts her on track to be in the 6-7 pound range according to the charts, but not all dogs fall in those nice, neat guidelines. The weight of the parents is only one variable in determining what the adult weight of a dog might be- the size of the grandparents and all of the pups that they have thrown weighs in, too. More concerning is the fact that you didn't see where the dogs were raised and that she has multiple dogs. It's always recommended that you see exactly what the conditions are that the dog is raised in. Whether or not she's full Yorkie is hard to tell. Some have longer snouts, some shorter faces. Coats vary and can change over time. At 13 weeks, I would have told you that Rhett had a cotton coat and Scarlett's was silky- As their adult coats came in, it completely swapped. The rate of hair growth is also determined by genetics, so some will have longer hair at an earlier age than others. As for personality, all people don't have the same type, so why should we expect all dogs of a certain breed to have a type? My female is definitely more "opinionated" that my male and she's not shy about bossing him around. The poor guy some times has a look on his face of pure bewilderment, wondering what it was he did this time to deserve her wrath!

| Nope, not a Yorkie at all...better send her straight to me! Just kidding, she looks like a Yorkie to me....and a VERY cute one too. Sounds like you got her from a shady breeder? She might not be to standard then. Always buy your breeder first, then the puppy and you won't have any doubts. (For anyone else reading this thread.)

| Looks 100% Yorkie to me. I guess you don't have Limited AKC registration for this pup then? My 100% Yorkie has a tricolored cottony coat and is 9 pounds. If you've had her for two days haven't you taken her to your vet yet for a 48 hour well check where her health will be fully evaluated with a fecal sample and a blood panel along with the vet inspecting her physically-for your health guarentee? Not all pups need to be dewormed if they don't have worms why would you do it? I suggest putting her on a heart worm med like Iverheart Plus which will protect her against heart worms and the three parasitical worms you use dewormer for. In the mean time if she does has worms, she can pass them to you and your other dog, so bag some of her pooh and get her to your vet for her inn ital check up. Your vet can also DNA test her for breed identification. It's not as expensive as it sounds. I did it with my rescue pound puppy. Please research Dr. Dodd's vaccination schedule and ensure your vet is using it. I'm curious though what kind of breeder you got her from, I'm guess not a very reputable one? Also what you paid for her and what was included in her sale, since you mentioned feeling ripped off.

| Yea she looks all yorkie to me, she seems to have more of the terrier look while carter has the "babydoll" look. Both are pretty off-standard so i'd assume you paid a pet price for them. Either way they are both very cute as for the loud barking and rough housing..well yorkies /are/ terriers my Teddy growls with his toys in his mouth, barks at the TV, and will get into EVERYTHING. This morning he heard the school kids getting on the bus and he started barking as if to say "hey! let me sleep!"

| LOL, Looks yorkie to me! I'm kind of new to yorkie ownership, but have been reading everything I can get my hands on and the net constantly looking and finding info about this breed. My little fella didn't have the silky body, but has the silky head. His markings are somewhat blended together, but that only makes him not to AKC showing standards. He is 8 1/2 lbs, 12 inches long and tall. I asked many people here, my vet, and the groomer, and from all the info I've found, I believe him to be pure yorkie. He has the classic tan and blue/black, but has some silver on top of his head. It was hard to tell how much yorkie he had until after his first grooming as he was a mess when I got him, but now you can really see it! Many yorkies are small, but there will always be variations in size, attititude, etc because of the dogs breeds used to make up the yorkie! There will always be throw backs to those breeds. I've also found out that there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie, there are only small yorkies or runts. IMHO,your baby looks pure to me! There are 3 coat types, but then some dogs like Mojo, will have 2 different coats on 1 little body, lololol. I don't think his body hair will ever grow show length, but his head grows like crazy! Once he was shaved I can now see where more tan will come in on him and more silver. I can't wait to see it! Also, this breed are terriers. They were bred to hunt rats and they can bark and scent and run, play like crazy! Sounds like ur baby girl is doing what comes natural! Mojo growls when he plays with his toys and us, he barks at any animal that even looks at our yard! He watches birds in th sky and chases leaves floating down! He is a go getter! I love that about him! Enjoy ur baby! |
