| Treats Sadie almost choked on a treat six months ago, and it scared me so much that I have not given her anything but biscuit type treats since then. I hide them inside of a Kong and she goes crazy trying to get it out. This is the only toy she has ever played with. I decided she needs something more to help keep tartar off of her teeth. Tonight I bought her some Dingo Mini Chip Twists. A man at the store talked me into them and said his little Chihuahua loves them. Well, she almost had another choking episode and this really stresses me out. She did well with Greenies years ago, but then I heard they were not safe. A friend sent me a site where it says they have changed the ingredients, and are safe now. Is anyone using Greenies now without a problem? And, what about Nylabones? Safe? Thanks everyone, and if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Kate

| Hi Kate, Just a thought, but have you tried bully sticks? I know my yorkie had a lot of tartar on her teeth when I first got her at 9 months, and I gave her bully sticks to chew on, and it removed a lot of the tartar. She just loves them, too. She thinks she's in heaven when she's chewing on one.

| My Brutus has a sensitive stomach so no rawhide for him. Can someone recommend a good brand of bully stick?

| There is risk for choking on nearly anything. There's been a dog who choked on kibble and died. Nothing is 100% safe. But you can just be as safe as you can. Those Dingo Twists are rawhides, I believe, and I'd never feed rawhide. It's known to be cause blockages and not be digested well. Plus, rawhide usually gets real slimy and gross, and easy to swallow. When Jackson was a pup, he choked on a rawhide and he's never choked on anything before. It slid down and got stuck in his throat -- so scary! I've never had issues with treats... were they just a soft treat? You can break off tiny pieces, things like Zuke's and Buddy Biscuits (the soft ones) shouldn't really be a choking hazard. I suppose it depends on if your dog likes to swallow things whole. Never had an issue with bully sticks. When they would get down to about 2", I'd take them away. Greenies, you are right, had issues in the past. No idea if they fixed them or not but I wouldn't feed. I don't mind Nylabones but they don't work for us.... Jackson chews off chunks, and also they get really sharp edges from where he's chewed and cut his mouth. Plastic can't be that great for them to eat/chew on, IMO, so I don't really like them much. Again, depends on how hardcore your dog is of a chewer. The only chews I've ever personally liked are Himalayan Chews and Bully Sticks but some won't like those, either, so *shrugs* It's just a matter of finding what works for your dog....

| My Geno chews on Greenies and LOVES them. I didn't know they might not be safe. We really don't give them to him all the time. Just one a day, or every other day. We used to give him Smartbones. They are an alternative to rawhide since I knew rawhide wasn't always the greatest thing to give to a pet, and the breeder had recommended these bones. He LOVED these but after he would chew one up, he would start to gag and spit up. So we stopped giving these to him and stuck with the greenies. Geno also loves his nylabone but I noticed a lot of dogs do not like them. Geno I guess is an exception. He hasn't choked on his nylabone but we always make sure to give him the nylabone only when we are present. When we go out and put him in the crate, we don't like to put his nylabone in there cause we're afraid he might choke. Instead, we give him one of those minty rope bones to chew on. I mean really, like Brister said, they can ultimately choke on anything, you just need to err on caution on deciding when and what to give them .

There are other places to get bully sticks, too. Maybe someone can recommend some other places.

| I just get the regular ones. I've never ordered the braided ones. Someone else might know if they're safe or not, but I would guess they probably are.

| I get some of the braided ones and regular ones from bestbullysticks.com. Callie is a crazy chewer and the braided lasts her a few days where the regular ones go in a day sometimes.

Sadie used to eat bully sticks, and in fact, I have a freezer full right now. The problem she has is that after eating one of these, she smells awful, and I quickly give her a bath. Have they been improved, or do you must deal with the odor? Thanks to the person replying about rawhide. I was wondering about the possiblity of these messing with her intestines. Scary! I do give her small kibble type treats, but I feel I need something more to deal with the tartar so she does not have to go to the dental every year. Thanks for everyones' feedback. I love this group.

| I don't believe rawhide is good for dogs so I give Gracie Bully sticks. I get the foot long ones as she loves the things and she will work on a 12" one for over a week. I always throw away the last 3 to 4 inches of the stick to make sure there is no chance of choking. Gracie also likes the chicken jerky. They don't last very long. I only get the better brand because we did have a problem with the cheaper brand being too brittle and hard to chew properly. I don't know what I would do without the bully sticks. They keep her entertained and help stay out of trouble. Without them she tries to chew things that she should not and will steal things like pens and plastic of any kind to chew. |

| My gals used to fight over bullies, so we don't do those anymore. Plus, they would develop a long stringy-type part when softened by chewing, and Luna almost choked one time. We now use these: Zuke's Z-Ridge Cranberry Fresh Breath Dental Bone Mini 15pk This is the cheapest I have found, too. They come in different flavors, we get the cranberry and original ones. They do have way less tartar on their teeth now, and they don't break into pieces or get sharp at all. Izzy eats hers in about 5 minutes (she's my bigger girl) and Luna takes about 30 minutes. They love them
