Hi All, Myles is 14 yrs old+ he is active when he wants to and than sleeps for hours at a clip he is still alert and a loving member of our family I have had yorkies so I know they have teeth issues my first yorky got all his teeth pulled at 14 yrs old and he lived til 18 but myles seems different I dont know if I should get his teeth pulled now. It is bothering me he has gone for a cleaning and gone under around 5 years ago but it is to the poine now he tries to bark and he sneezes i think b/c his mouth is bothering him if u hit his mouth on accident he is frightened even if u go to touch there My question to u all is do i put him under to get his teeth done or do i leave him alone? The vet said if his blood showed infection definitely but his blood work is fine so far. I just feel bad for him sometimes b/c I know my other yorky lived 4 more years after it was done but I dont know if myles is as strong as my first yorky was any feedback will help me out from owners of senior yorkies!!!! thanks soo much Denise |

| If you feel it is dangerous to do it, then you might consider a state university vet hospital and talk with them about it. I know it's a tough decision.

| Old age is not a disease, so that is not the final deciding factor. A vet should assess the pup, read the lab results, maybe do an EKG and urinalysis, and then decide if it is safe to proceed. Not taking care of the teeth can weaken the organs.

| Just had my 12 yr.old Poms teeth cleaned & some pulled. They did blood work etc before to make sure it was safe. Her heart is strong & that is a plus. She had had a bad tooth so was on antibotics a few days b/4 so that no bacteria got in blood stream when cleaning was done. and will be on antibotics a few more days now. But is doing great. She was ready for food as soon as she got home. I always worry but I trust my vet as much as I could anyone. He has been so good to my babies. Been using him about 30 years..........

If his teeth are hurting him I would most certainly have it checked out.

Totally agree. Maxine is 14 1/2 and gets her teeth cleaned and checked once a year. It is good for them as long as the blood work is good. | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Nikki had all his rotted teeth pulled and gum build up done due to being found on the streets in total neglect. He is estimated to be about 19 now and that was 2 years ago. His mouth was in such bad shape I couldn't believe it when the vet was finally able to get his mouth open. He was in surgery for 4 hours if I remember correctly and recovered fine. We did the pre anesthesia blood work and they put him on an antibiotic a few days prior to surgery. Now 2 years later he is doing fine. Eats like crazy, even small pieces of kibble and treats. If the vet feels your baby would be better off with the teeth pulled and all his blood work looks good he will probably feel better a few days after surgery. Good luck and keep us posted.
