| So upsetting... So I was driving home this evening... and in my neighborhood down the street from my house was this tiny yorkie walking around in a yard. My first thought was this baby HAD to have gotten away from home bc he was all alone. I pulled over and jumped out of my car and went into the yard and saw that this lil one had one of those shock collars on! I was petting the little one and a man came out and asked if I had a problem and I told him that I was just concerned bc I thought he was lost. He told me clearly he wasn't and that I was in his yard. I left crying bc the baby was maybe 5 lbs and the collar looked like it weighed more than him! We have a lot of yorkies in my neighborhood and everyone usually socializes as we have our babies on leashes on walks... but NEVER have I seen one just roaming around a yard with no fence! Whats to stop a person or other animal coming IN their yard to hurt him??? I felt so horrible driving off and gave Oliver extra kisses when I got home.

| This must be common, there is another thread just started that a neighbor of the OP lets her yorkie wander all over the neighborhood. It is sad people can't take care of their animals. The collar is suppose to keep the dog in the yard, they must have an invisible fence.

| Yes... I should have been more specific about that... I recognized the collar once I walked up to the dog... so I knew it was for an invisible fence... I just don't think a Yorkie is the type of dog that should be able to wander outside alone... again nothing is preventing something harmful to come into the yard. You are right... its a shame people aren't thinking about the well being of their baby.

| I agree, people get these invisible fences thinking it's the answer. It does serve it's purpose however I know for a fact that dogs do get out of them. Also things can and will go into the area where the fences are. I live in a semi wooded area and we have tons of wildlife. I have seen deer and foxes inside of the invisible fences of my neighbors yards many, many times. We also have very large buzzards and hawks flying above. We had thought about an invisible fence at one point but realized that the collar would probably topple our babies over. We would have only used it when we were out with them, never intended for them to just roam around on their own.

| Hate those invisible fences no matter what sized dog. Nothing to prevent other dogs from coming INTO the yard and attacking your baby and nothing to prevent someone from coming into the yard, removing the collar and walking off with your dog. |

| There was just a follow up ad on CL saying a pair of poodles have been found, though they were both without their invisible fence collars. They were probably left unattended & I wonder if someone tried to "rescue" them.
