Experiences with your new puppy? I just got my Yorkie puppy on Thanksgiving. He was 12 weeks old. I have never had anything other than Basset Hounds so I didn't know what to expect with a small dog. I have never had a new puppy that didn't cry all night when I first got him. This Yorkie has never done that, not even the first night. He doesn't even cry at night to go potty. He sleeps in his crate for at least 7 hours a night. I have to wake him up when I get up for work! After having him a week, we taught him to use the doggie door. He learned it in one day and has been going outside to potty ever since. We had an area rug in the family room and every once in awhile he would pee on that, but since removing that he has not had an accident in the house. I keep him in a pen during the day and come home at lunch to let him out. He has never had an accident in the pen. I know he cannot be potty trained so soon, but he is doing great! Have any of you had these same experiences with your Yorkie puppy?

Once in a while he'll forget and sneak upstairs onto the carpet and use it there. But other then that I have no complaints about his potty training. I was with him 24/7 for the first week or had my dad who was on vacation with him all the time. My class schedule is at all different times so I was confused about what to do. So The days I had one class I would take him with me and my boyfriend would stay in the car with him until I got back. But there was a couple days I had to leave him alone at home which was so sad because he doesn't like to be left alone. I don't have those puppy pens or gates or anything so I just used full boxes and blocked him of in the kitchen and I laid wee wee pads EVERYWHERE, I put his food/water in there, his bed, & his toys. He cried and cried so much.. and when I left I cried also. I don't like leaving him alone =[... anyways when I was gone he didn't even use the bathroom at all. But when I got back he surely did. I'm sorry I wrote so much..

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Congrats on the new puppy. Although we have a doggy door, I have it locked... Tallulah is so small that she could be picked up by a predatory bird, encounter a possum or the neighborhood cat that once sliced open the ear of my last dog that was 4 times it's size, wiggle through a gap in the fence, or easily be stolen. I can imagine much worse than coming home to find that my dog has been hurt or has disappeared. Tallulah didn't cry at night the first few nights - nor did she "go" in her pen. But now she does cry occasionally and it's always because she needs to go. The only time she fusses aside from potty time is when she's left alone. She's getting a little better but we have been working out some serious separation anxiety. |

Congrats on the new puppy! I just got my baby porscha on 12/5. I wish i had luck but she's made our room into a big ol' wee wee pad! She was sick the first few days and was in and out of vet clinics so now she hates the crate which she initally loved. Because of this i'm not pushing the training just yet but i have a feeling i'm going to regret not doing so. She crys to be on the bed with me and i just can't find it in my heart to say no.

Hi!!! This is my first post, too--I got my pup the Sunday before Thanksgiving. She has been wonderful throughout the night. I have a little exercise pen that fits her crate and potty pad, so if she has to go during the middle of the night, she just walks out of her crate and uses the pad. I've heard horror stories from friends about puppies keeping them up at night, but we've been so lucky! She's not 100% potty trained though (prob 85%)--I don't use a doggie door b/c I'm afraid another animal will come and snag her! I even make sure to keep her in my sight at all times when she's outside just in case. I"m probably being paranoid, but it's been known to happen. I have to say, I didn't know a lot about yorkies until I knew I'd be getting her, but they are the most wonderful dogs ever! I'm so thankful this is the breed I chose. I've spent hours on this website researching what I need to know so I'm so thankful that you guys are here! I can't even tell you how in love with her I already am! She learned sit, come, high five, and down all in the first week I had her (I got her at 13 weeks)! Yorkies are such smarty pants!!!

My Shadow just turned 7 months and she has never cried at night. I know I was actually worried at first because she held it in so long. But she was fine. She sleeps in a crate next to my bed and when I get up in the early morning to go to the bathroom, she goes with me, does her business on a pad and then comes in bed with me and my hubby. They are VERY smart, which works both ways. She's learning when she can get away with things (like when our attention is elsewhere!) Good luck and welcome to YT.
