| Female going to have a litter would like to keep a pup Hi, I have a two year old yorkie that is expecting puppies. I also have a 8 month old maltese male. I would like to keep one of her puppies (which would be spayed or nuetered) but was wondering if any of you have had issues with a bitch keeping one of her puppies around? She is very laid back and sweet and took to having our maltese around great. She seems to have very good maternal instincts as she has looked over the maltese since we brought him home. The only problems she has ever had with other dogs was with her sister that we had. They were litter mates and when they turned two they started fighting so bad that I thought it would end in a death. We re-homed the other dog as she was the aggressor. Any advice would be great! |

| The breeder we bought Lacie from had kept a puppy from the previous litter. They all seemed to get along great. I don't know whether that's the norm or not. |

| Well, I am hoping that others will say that too. It was heartbreaking to re-home Molly. I just want to make an informed decision, before deciding to keep one. And do you think a male or female would be better to keep? |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | The people I got Poppy from kept a boy from a previous litter and they all seem to get along fine, seen as it will be her own baby and the pup will grow up around her I dont see why it should be a problem. But I dont know much about breeding and have never been in this situation before. There are many brilliant breeders on YT and I there must have been atleast one who has kept a pup, hopefully those with more experience will be along to help you soon. Good luck.

| I have a female that I held back from a litter living in the same home as her mother. We've never encountered any issues whatsoever. Our female took time adjusting to other dogs that we brought in, but never with the girl that was her own pup. |

| I have had many mothers and daughters..they are life long companions, never had a problem...keeping a son is not the same..Mom will treat him a male once he is mature, not her son..LOL |

| From what I have read on these forums, it appears that two female yorkies will become aggressive to each other if they are not spayed - its hormonal. Keeping a puppy from litter would be fine, I think, if the puppy is later fixed, in order to avoid them becoming aggressive later on.

| I have a female and a male from my Sassy, she gets along great with both of them. Both mother and daughter are spayed now, but Sassy has got to be one of the most even tempered dogs ever, she never wants to fight but will if need be. I don't know if I agree that spaying means no aggression, as I had a spayed girl that I had to rehome, she would fight with any other female, spayed or not. I think it depends on the individual dog. |

| Lots of people keep puppies from litters that I have seen. You won't have any problems as long as you spay her.

| Right now I have 3 sets of Mothers and Daughters and they all get along great. Never once has there been a fight between them, they have all formed a very special bond with each other.

| I appreciate all the replies! Keep them coming, lol. I know as a child we had many dogs that had puppies (my father thought vets were a waste of money, so no one was spayed or neutered. Very sad I know) And we never had issues. So when I got Misty and Molly I was totally surprised when they started fighting. I know had they both been spayed it may have never have occurred and will not make that mistake again. I guess one step at a time. Right now I will just pray for a healthy litter, continue to research and ask my vet and trainer. So thank you to everyone that replied. Last edited by BobbieD; 10-07-2010 at 01:07 PM.
