| How do I get Gypsy to pee outside? We just brought her home last night so she's still quite nervous here. At home she had a doggy door out into a run and a pee pad inside, no problems at all. But here it's like she doesn't know what to do outside and yet she sniffs all over so she must be able to smell where Tango pees. I took her out about 3 times between 8 and 11 pm but she didn't go so I put her in the bathroom overnight with her crate and a pee pad, this morning she still hadn't peed so I took her outside for about 10 -15 min. no pee. She was shivering so I took her in and sat with her on my lap for awhile and as soon as I put her down she peed on the carpet. Any suggestions? She is getting used to quite a lot all at once because at home she didn't have to wear a harness and leash when she went outside. Also I don't think there was much traffic on her road whereas my neighbourhood is quite busy. For those that didn't read my other posts she is almost 3 yrs. old, not a puppy. Any help you guys can give me to help her settle in and be happy here I will be grateful for. Thanks Kathy, Tango and Gypsy |

| Don't worry, I know it will take her awhile and we're going to be very patient with her. She already will sit and sleep on my lap, she's going to get lot's of loving here. I just want to be sure I don't do anything that will confuse her and make it more difficult for her and us. Thanks very much for your reply though. Kathy, Gypsy and Tango p.s. I'll post pictures soon, I don't want to add cameras flashing to all she has to adjust to right away. |

| HI, is anyone out there? I'm just really not sure what to do. I haven't let her run around loose all morning without really watching her. I took her out once and she seemed to like being out but still wouldn't pee. So when I brought her in we sat and watched TV for a little while and I thought before I put her down I would try her on the pee pad. Well, she sat and looked at me for a few minutes and then lay down on it! So I figured she must just not have to go and let her loose. Good thing I was watching her, she squatted right by the dining room table but I was able to get her in time, I told her No, outside. Quickly put her leash on and took her out. I stood out there with her for a good 10 min. and she wouldn't pee. So now she's back in the bathroom. Anybody have any ideas? I'm not upset with her or anything, I'm just not sure what is the best thing to do. |

| The next time she pees in the house. Take a pee pad and soak up her pee with it, then place it out side where you want her to go. Sometimes this trick works. Good Luck!

| I don't know how much time you can spend outside with her, but if you could possibly wait her out till she goes potty outside and then praise praise praise her and also give her a treat - she might get the idea you want her to go outside. It must be really frustrating to not be able to get her to go outside. I think the pee pad soaking idea above is a good one! I think you are just going to have to keep taking her outside till she goes and then use that positive reinforcement to help her understand that is what you want her to do. Also the more time you spend with her, the more likely she will want to please you - e.g. she'll want to go potty outside again because she'll want to please you. So, I think you are doing the exact right thing by holding her and giving her lots of attention. I think she will catch on, but it may take a little time.

| I think another important thing is to get the spot perfectly clean where she pees in the house. Regular household cleaners do not do the job. Nature's Miracle is a wonderful product that takes the odor out completely so they don't go back to that spot. When I had a pup I would always have a dry sponge ready, step on it, until it soaks up as much as you can (the really hard ones work best) and then use the natures miracle. It can be purchased on line or any pet supply store like Petsmart Pet supplies plus etc. Once she gets used to using the pee pee pads you can buy the incontintent pads in the Depends dept at Walgreens or Ebay and it is so much less expensive. Once we found out here on Yt that Shield Healthcare has a good price and Ebay sometimes also. Without the doggy door, I think she much be very confused.

| Well, it's been 36 hrs. since I brought her home and she's still only peed twice, both times on the carpet. She slept in the bathroom again with her crate and her pee pad (didn't use it) and this morning I took her out first thing. We were outside for close to 1/2 hr. and no peeing!! I know she's confused and I feel so bad because she's so good with her leash and harness, she will walk with me nicely and when I stop she sits down and looks up at me like she's waiting for me to decide what to do. I tried taking the pee pad out this morning and even that didn't help yet. I had to bring her in because she was getting too cold, Alberta mornings are pretty chilly this time of year. I put her back in the bathroom and in about 1/2 hr. I'll try again. I'm going to phone her breeder later too and see if she has any ideas. I do have some stuff from Petsmart for cleaning the spots on the carpet but I know if I let her out of the bathroom she'll pee on it first thing. I don't want to leave her in the bathroom for the rest of her life though. Thanks so much for all of your tips, I'll just have to keep trying. I already love her to pieces, she is so sweet and loveable (she really seems to like me already although I know she must miss her other Mama.) ps. I just realized how long this post was, sorry. |

| you are working so hard at this!! After you talk with your breeder, try to go with just one plan and don't worry; she'll come around. It's cold here in Ohio so I can just imagine how it must be in Alberta. If it were warm you'd have it made because you could go out in the morning and take your lunch with you and a snack to reward her. Five hrs and she surely would pee and then you could take her to that spot ea. day. I would not give her any treats except for this training until it is under control. Dogs will just do about anything for those little liver treats (Bil Jac makes them and a couple other co's) Once she knows she has to pee outside to get one, it should help. You have to give it to her immediately so have one in your pocket. If you wait until you get in they don't have the slightest idea of what it is for....Good Luck.

| Good luck - I think calling the breeder is a great idea - she might be able to give you some helpful information about her likes, dislikes, etc.

| I think you're doing all the right things. It's probably going to take her some time to adjust to her new surroundings. |

| Chloe did this. I just knew if she ever pee peed once, she would figure it out and eventually she did. It is so frustrating and tiring. One suggestion is to be sure you go to the same spot. You can tug a little on the leash and lower your voice, say the same phrase, go potty or whatever and then praise in a higher tone with a great treat. Mine liked lamb and rice, just a small bit. Good luck |

| She finally peed outside!! Yayyy!! She went almost 24 hrs!. I thought for sure she would have an accident on the bathroom floor last night but she didn't. I took her out at 6:30 am and after about 10 min. she squatted and peed. It must have been such a relief, lol. Anyway now all I have to do is see if she'll do it again. I think it was making sure that she didn't get down on the carpet that did it, she won't pee on the linoleum because that's what she had at home so she knew that was a no-no (it was the carpet that she'd never been on before). Thanks so much for your support and suggestions. She's settling in very well, I'll post pictures soon. Kathy, Tango and Gypsy |
