YT Addict | Bark, leaves and sticks - oh my!! Every time I take my babies outside, all they want to do is eat bark, pine cones, sticks, etc. My DH says he can't wait to see them poop 2 x 4's. I am very concerned this might hurt them (not the 2x4's, that was a joke) hehehe They will eat a whole pine cone in one outing. Does anyone else have this problem?

| Oh I did have this problem until one stick to many cost me about $400.00 in a vet bill (she had a very upset tummy). We learned the "leave it" command very quickly. Sophie Kate has one Pine Cone that she is allowed to have in her mouth while we walk - but no chewing. She parks in next to the garage and we grab it everytime we walk. For some reason she likes to have something in her mouth when we walk.

| Murphy Too!! Murphy loves to eat things off the ground outside. ~ his favorite things are sticks and pine cones. He tries to smuggle in sticks/pinecones when he comes in. On occasion he has been successful in bringing in old leaves. I am trying to teach him not to pick things off the ground to eat; but he is being stubborn and now has a 'chase me' game on the ready for when I see he has something in his mouth! |

| Chloe is like this but we have been working on the leave it command because I worry she will pick up something that is dangerous one day... I think teaching a leave it command is your best bet at this point. Good Luck

| OMG'sh, this is the bug bear of my life...My Apple wants to put every single solitary thing in her mouth, and chew it up...I just recently, switched to kibble in the evening (they were on raw twice a day), hoping it would alleviate her "crunch" need...I thought she would outgrow it, but she's over a year and a half now...I just can not leave her alone in the back yard, and she knows "put it down", but it's a constant battle Buzz, on the other hand, isn't quite so bad...He will try to chew an occasional stick (small twig on a tree), and I'm on that, as quick as I can to get it away from him...Someone, on here, posted that they let their dog have free reign w/this sort of thing, and ended up w/an obstruction, that required surgery, not to mention all the expense...A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do, and that is not to let their little ones chew up bark, limbs, cones and stuff...Our babies are special, and need special supervision... |

That is so funny! I'm curious tho, how in the world did you get her to just hold it and not chew it up??

| Well it started with a small tennis ball, I figured out she likes something in her mouth when she walks but the ball got lost so now its a pine cone. We stil have problems when spots something more interesting like a piece of paper but usually its her pine cone. If she starts chewing it I take it away from her and carry it (I would estimate we had to do this twice in maybe 3 months). The leave it command took some time for her to learn and while I was training her on that nothing was allowed in her mouth in or out of the house unless I gave it to her. Good luck, I am glad I am not the only owner of a stick eating Yorkie.

| I have a similar problem. Boo Boo isn't into sticks though...he's addicted to rabbit poo. I pull him away as soon as I catch him, but I'm worried that he's going to get some disease from the rabbits. Every single time we go outside he starts sniffing and finds where the rabbits were. I'm just hoping he doesn't find the rabbits one day! |

| rabbit poo My vet says a lot of rabbit poo will not hurt the puppies, good protein ... eating a rabbit though is not good. My dog trainer recommended I give Jonah something he liked to carry (his ball) when we went for walks to keep him from eating junk. It was a miraculous solution at first, but he soon figured out he could drop the ball, when he saw some morsel of whatever on the ground, and pick up the ball after he enjoyed the contraband. I f I pick up the ball as soon as he drops it, he is distracted long enough to miss whatever is on the ground. So, it is a good tool to use in addition to "leave it " command. Jonah has learned to get my reward treat for "leaving it" and if the situation is just right he can still manage to pick up whatever was on the ground after he consumes the treat! Aren't Yorkies fun!
