| Teiya's visit with the vet I've officially had Teiya a week now. We went to the vet today and we had quite a talk about her and some concerns that I have. She weighs just 3lbs, 7 oz. VERY underweight. She should be between 4 and 5 lbs. However, she won't eat much kibble. She'll gobble down wet food in seconds, but the kibble gets picked at. For the first few days, I wasn't offering her anything wet, however, when I saw she wasn't eating enough, I had to get something in her, so I bought a case of Nutro Max puppy formula and started giving her that in addition to her Solid Gold. Nothing can be done for her until we get her weight up. So in the meantime, we're increasing her canned food and just letting her continue picking at her kibble. Today, she got her bordetella, rabies and distemper shots, presurgical bloodwork and we're checking her liver, a heartworm test, fecal exam and a years supply of Interceptor. She'll be seen again for her weight in a month. Her breath is nasty. I love her to pieces but I have to turn my head on the doggie kisses. I figured her teeth needed cleaned, so we discussed that and will set an appointment after her recheck. Turns out, Teiya still has 2 baby teeth that never fell out as well as quite a bit of tarter. She's 1 1/2 now. They should have been extracted LONG ago. It could be another reason she's not eating kibble. I'm cursing the breeder, but at least she'll be well taken care of now. I've decided to spay her. I have no intention of breeding, so there's no reason not to and a million reasons why I should. Again, we can't do that until I get some meat on her bones. We're also going to microchip her while she's under anesthesia. I've decided (even though it's more costly) to go with the laser surgery and better pain management. Total for everything comes to $1280.63 *sigh* she'd better know I love her!

| she's a year and a half, born June 14, 2007. I got her from a local breeder. She was adopted out to another family initially and returned after a few months to the breeder for some reason. The breeder was initially going to keep her, but decided she needed her forever home, so here she is with me! She's the sweetest, most lovable dog I've ever met. She's had it a little rough, but she's so spoiled and pampered now. I took her in because I knew she needed some help and had some health concerns that needed to be addressed. If placed next to a healthy dog, I would have adopted Teiya anyway. She didn't have the best care in the first year of her life, but that all changes now.

| I would definately spay her. She has probably had at least 1 or 2 heats already and the risk or cancer increases with each heat. I bet she'll eat much better after her teeth are cleaned and the baby teeth pulled. Yes, there are some down side to spaying but they are much more rare then the risk of cancer. I don't know what health issues the above poster is referring to but if her only problem is being underweight she shoud do fine. |

| Please Google "Nutro Consumer Affairs" and reconsider. It has been blamed on sickness and death in many dogs...

| According to the breeder, she's had 1 heat cycle and will probably come into heat again within the next few months. I want to do what's best for Teiya. She's my companion and my friend. If it's best to leave her intact, I will. If it's best to spay her, I'll do that. While Teiya is a beautiful girl, IMO, she's not breed standard or a good specimen to breed. She's so small that I question the risk to her health should she ever become pregnant.

OMG! I'm just sick. I had no idea. I picked up Nutro Max on a recommendation from a friend of mine. Now I gotta find another type of canned food to give her. Any recommendations?

I am verrrry picky though. I don't support Menu Foods if possible because I think they "may" take too long to recall bad food and some of the other companies...I just don't like them or what they test for in the foods. I'm sure there are good ones out there though. Maybe the Natural Balance food roll would be worth looking into.

| you might want to ck into Wellness foods, it's Holistic and ALL natural with out fillers,etc.. the first few ingredients in the food should be chicken or beef, NOT BI PRODUCTS, they are mostly wings, and other parts WE wouldn't consider eating..... hope this helps..... |

You also eliminate her risk of pyometra by spaying her. We have a member with a very sick Yorkie right now about the same age as Teiya. She was just diagnosed with pyometra and is fighting for her life. | |
