| Are Norwich Terriers anything like Yorkies? I know that sounds like a strange question but someone suggested to me that maybe a Norwich would make a better choice for me since they are a little sturdier breed. So now I am doing research on them too but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with that breed and could compare the two together? |

| To me there is no comparrison. The Norwich Terrier is the same as the Norfolk Terrier. Only difference is the ears. The Norwich has erect ears and the Norfolk floppy. Both breeds have a very course coat. They certainly are cute but don't know about their personalities. They do not grow a long coat and are brown/carmel color. Do some research on their temperment. A neighbor had two(Norfolk) and they were pretty yappy. Didn't like Buddy but they were adorable. I believe they are also very intellegent as well. |

| A friend of my daughters had a Norwich Terrier. It reminded me of a Cairn Terrier only she had longer legs. I remember she was a sweet little thing and very smart.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | They need a lot more exercise than a yorkie, and have lot of energy. Regular exercise is a must.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Here's a link to the mother club, I know the Cairn terrier we had had wirey hair and it felt rough to the touch, but I'm not sure of the Norwich Terrier. Living With Our Breeds

| The ones I have seen at the shows are wiry and their coat has to be "stripped" and not just cut. Much the way a Westie is supposed to be done if done properly. Takes a lot of time and patience as I understand it. But they are adorable and if I ever get out of the yorkies that is a breed I am looking at. |

| If you're looking for a sturdy yorkie, there are some out there! My girl who I got through a rescue weighs 12 pounds, takes 7+ mile hikes with me, and has even scaled a few snow-topped mountains at my side. I don't think anybody would ever accuse her of being less than robust, and it is really great fun to come across other hikers on a trail who comment on how my little dog has more energy than they do!

| i actually was looking at the norfolk and norwich way before i had my yorkie kids...i had contacted a couple of show breeders and learned about the breed...i was trying to decide whether or not they would fit in my lifestyle and then i found yorkies although i think they are adorable, the yorkie was for me the double coat and handstripping required seemed like a lot of work...and my fiance is allergic to most dogs and we thought it would aggravate his allergies (would hate to adopt a baby only to learn he cannot be around them)...he does fine with our yorkies and no major allergies

| I am torn right now.... I am glad I don't have to decide soon.. The coat of either breed doesn't bother me.... seriousely, after a chow, these dogs are nothing!! I am doing more and more research on both breeds, trying to decide what would work best with my family and I. We like to travel and having 3 kids, I do want a dog that can handle them, even though they are all super gentle and I have a zero tolerance for anything in my house! lol Even with my chow my kids are allowed to play with him(ball, fetch, etc) but no tug-a-war, no rough housing and no chase..... I won't take the chance of someone getting bit or the dog getting hurt because someone got out of hand. I want a indoor dog but one that can handle being outside for a while too and can go camping and get dirty. But yet one that likes to kick and watch tv but isn't overbearing and in your face all the time... The other thing I know I want is to have a dog that is not a 'yapper'.... my sister has a chihuahua and honestly that thing drives me NUTS! It will bark for no reason, it will bark if you talk while it is sleeping, it barks when a plane goes by, it barks when the wind blows... it barks at EVERYTHING! I can't handle it! lol I think it will just come down to more research and more planning. I am hoping I have a long time to wait before I have to make this choice(after my chow is gone) but at the same time, I am very excited. If anyone has any other knowledge on the Norwich, please let me know.... or any on the Yorkie for that matter.... Or if you have a different breed suggestion.... |

What other info are you looking for? We were talking about the Norwich, or at least a few of us were. So just not sure what else you are wanting to know.

Also, have you thought about a havanese? My BIL is 15 and soooo rough, but his havanese is VERY sturdy and can handle it surprisingly. He's about the same size as my 13 lber, but he's shorter and thicker. Smokey (my 13 lber) is tall, long, and lanky. The havanese is a really fun dog too!

Actually, everyone has given alot of help. I was just trying to see if anyone had any other info that hadn't been mentioned, for either breed.... or perhaps another breed suggestion that might work for my family. I am leaning one way but haven't decided yet.... Once I finally decide then it will be breeder/line research time...etc. I have had so many dogs with rare genetic defect, and congenital defects that I refuse to go unknowledged into my next dog. I want to know EVERYTHING possible about the breed I choose... And I know if I do it now, then I won't be making purely a emotional decision when it comes time to get another dog. I really appreciate everyones help and advice!! Ashley V.... I will look them up to and see if they might work for us...
