| New here and hi!! I just recently found yorkietalk and thought I'd introduce myself! My family and I are currently looking for a yorkie as I've always wanted one. I've done lots of research and talked to a lot of people, and I feel good about it. Now it's just finding the right one! I do have a question (and I'm sure more will arise) I've gotten conflicting responses in regards to whether yorkies are good with children or not. Some say yes, some say no. My children are 4 and older and we do have pets, so they know the rules and how to treat animals, but helpful adivce would be great! I look forward to getting to know you all. |

| Welcome to YT. I've had good experiences with Yorkies & children. However, the children should be old enough to understand how to handle a small dog. If you get an adult Yorkie, it'll depend on individual personality. You'll want to get a larger one, e.g., greater than 7 lbs. A pup could be an issue with a 4 year old.

| Hi and welcome..... Yes children and yorkies do go great together. But I do recommend that your yorkie be larger in size. I have a 3lb and a 7lb. The 7pounder gets along fine with my younger nieces and nephews and you can play rough with him and he loves it. The 3lb I would definitely not allow the the children to play with, she is just too fragile. Hope this helps and good luck with finding your new baby!!

| Welcome to yt! My 2 two yr old grandchildren do very well with my 5# Olivia, but I do not allow them to pick her up. They know to be "easy" with her because she is a "baby". The biggest challenge is keeping the kids from sharing their snacks with Olivia!

| Yorkie and Children go together well if you, as parents, are good role models and good at giving consistent direction. I had yorkies as my kids were born and now I have yorkies as I have grandchildren. I wouldn't recommend a tiny one - less than 5#s because we all know that accidents do happen - their little bones are well, LITTLE and very fragile. Just as another responder said, go for a little bigger one - remember you can always get another as the kids get older! I think there is alot of stuff out there about how tiny they are, the fact that they can get into ANYTHING and kids aren't real good about keeping stuff picked up (and some older people I know!), etc. Alot of it is more precautionary in nature. Good luck with your decision!

| Wow...thanks for all the advice! So many people had advised me to wait because of the kids, so it's great to hear all of your personal experiences. I have talked to my children about it being a possibility to get a little dog and that they wouldn't be allowed to pick it up unless an adult was present...kind of like the rules with a new baby. |

| Keegan is 12# & loves kids, Clarence 6.5# just stays clear of them. I think having a pet when your kids are young is a good lesson for them plus it gives them someone safe to tell their secrets to. There is so much your kids can gain from a child loving a pet. |

| jackson is great with all the kids he's been around! (an 11 month old and a 5 year old, among older kids 10 and 13, etc) i think it's usually better if you get the dog as a puppy, that way they grow up with the kid(s) and there shouldn't be any problems! sometimes if you adopt an older one, they're just not used to it.
