hey guys we just got Jack (2.5 year old male) on saturday night from one of the YT'ers. we LOOOOOOVE him to pieces already. anyway he has a marking problem. we r looking to have him neutered by the end of the year. in the mean time, we're goin to try coins in the bottle technique. since he's obviously been marking for a while, do u think it will go away or at least decrease if we get him neutered???? thanks

I had Duke neutered later rather than sooner, and he will still mark spots if he smells an animal that he's not used to. He wont do it in others houses if they don't have pets, and he doesn't do it at my parents even with the cats. But if I take him to someone's house and they have pets, he will pee, he also tries to do it still if I take him to petsmart.

Personally I think marking varies between dogs. Ramsey, my female, marks...Reese doesn't and hasn't ever marked....Reggie marks.

All of mine were neutered at 6 months...

Fortunately none of mine mark inside my house...

How about a belly band? That should help in the house.
I never had a male dog mark inside my house, thank the heavens above.
I could not deal with that. Buddy does mark every leaf, twig,
bush etc that he sees outdoors.

yea i been thinkin about belly bands but i hate the thought of having him hold it. i hate holdin it myself, yet alone a lil baby. i just pray that once we neuter him he will stop marking inside at least. i dont really care about outside or anything, but just not inside the house lol. we've bought nature's miracle today and are praying that helps some. i know he knows how to use the pee pads cuz wen he uses them, its alot. its not a little bit of spray like it is wen he marks

I would suggest trying the belly bands also. My little guy is a marker and he has to wear them constantly because of it. Just let him out often to go potty and there should be no problems with him having to "hold it"

Marking is not the same as peeing, so he won't really be "holding it." This dog will probably mark the rest of his life, since he's older, and neutering will help get rid of the stronger smell associated with unneutered dogs. Punishment for marking doesn't work, and the use of belly bands and a pad is suggested.

well we dont punish him for it, we just say no wen we catch him. we might just end up using belly bands. but we are trying that change in a bottle thing. hope that works

The change in the bottle is considered an aversive technique, and punishment, since you are trying to reduce the probability of a response (marking). Appropriate punishment is very effective in some cases, but it has been said it's not effective for marking, he will just mark when you're not looking. It's really wired into them to mark, and even extreme forms of punishment don't work.

my mom has a 10 year old golden yorkie/chi mix and he was not neutered until recently and marked all over the place.. he would lift his leg everywhere!!! i got her to use the wee wee wraps for about 3 months before he was neutered and now he doesnt mark at all.. he got really good at holding it with the wraps and now he just goes outside in one big pee instead of little pees all over the place... his change is amazing, especially at this age

I read others say that the use of bellybands has resulted in discouraging their dogs from marking, and that in time the bands were not needed. However, please don't confuse peeing with marking, they are two different things.

i absolutely know the difference. im still tyring to get my bf to notice the diff tho lol. anyway if the marking doesnt go away after the neuter in the near future, belly bands it will be. we do have him around wee wee pads now so hopefully that will make a diff. just cuz he marks, we wont love him any less tho. god i love these munchkins. i wish i had 1000000 of them so i can get yorkie kisses alllllll the time. hmmm

i know the difference.. but before when he went out to relieve himself he primarily was marking in many different places, and now he just pees in one go.. that is what i was trying to say.. sorry

Oh please, I hope my reply didn't offend you, so many people don't know this, I haven't known it very long, but it's important to understand the difference and why the usual house breaking routine doesn't work with marking.
