The change in the bottle is considered an aversive technique, and punishment, since you are trying to reduce the probability of a response (marking). Appropriate punishment is very effective in some cases, but it has been said it's not effective for marking, he will just mark when you're not looking. It's really wired into them to mark, and even extreme forms of punishment don't work.
