Marking is not the same as peeing, so he won't really be "holding it." This dog will probably mark the rest of his life, since he's older, and neutering will help get rid of the stronger smell associated with unneutered dogs. Punishment for marking doesn't work, and the use of belly bands and a pad is suggested.
