| Hello, new parents of 10 week old yorkie Hi, we are new to this forum as well as new parents to a male 10 week old yorkie named Coco. We are trying to crate train him, he is fine during the day and loves his crate as long as the door is open. At night he will sleep only an hour to an hour and a half and then wake up and do this through the night. We take him out but usually he does not have to go. Any advice would be welcome. |

| Hello and welcome to YT! When we got Elvis he was 12 weeks old. A neighbor so kindly gave us a soft Sherpa travel bag for dogs which had the soft netting. We placed that on our bed between my DH and myself and Elvis slept all night long. Luckily this worked for us. Good luck with your little baby!

| Thanks. Coco has no problem sleeping on our laps or on the sofa with us. We're afraid that if we let him sleep in our bed with us he will want nothing to do with the crate which will render crate training useless. Thanx. |

| Real Crate Training We didn't do crate-training-to-the-very-last-minor-detail but used it to help with potty training...maybe that's why Johnny still has "accidents." It is a help in getting the pup on a schedule. Some withhold water after a certain time after dinner to help with fewer trips outside at night. Decide if you want your pup to sleep in his crate at night or not and then enforce that. After 2 nights, Johnny stopped barking/crying to get out of his crate and still sleeps there every night. He even goes in his crate by himself when he see me get my keys to go somewhere! Be consistent. Wishing you many happy years with your furbaby!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Can you put his crate next to your bed at night? I have had a puppy sleep with me at night several times and then put them in their crate during the day and they get use to it. They do settle in so hang in there.

| Welcome to YT. I don't have any advice on the night crate training because ours sleep on the bed with us. Just wanted to welcome you.

| Welcome to YT! How about an old-fashioned ticking clock near him or a radio - some people say white noise helps them sleep just like a new human baby. It is hard to ignore especially when you think they might need to go out - but he is also learning you will get up if he makes enough noise. The other idea is to move the kennel into your room. I know some people say this helps them remain calm because they know you are nearby

| Thanks to all who welcomed us. Last night we put him in his crate by our bed. Whenever he would whimper I would put my hand by his crate so I could touch him and he calmed down and was fine all night. I really appreciate all the advice! The family is crazy about this little puppy and we are all working hard to make him a very happy and safe home! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Both my dogs despise crates and never took to them - so we gated them off instead to small areas w/ a bed, water, and pee pad - this worked much better for them. I like your user name - are you a Pastry Chef, by chance?

| From the first night we brought her home, Bitsy slept in her crate. We placed it on our bed between us so that she could see/hear us and she only cried for a minute or two the first few nights. We would put our fingers through the crate door so that she would know we were there and she would calm down. After 3 months in the crate, sleeping all night with no potty accidents in the crate, she graduated to sleeping in the bed with us. She either sleeps on the bed between us or on my pillow curled around my head. |

| I put Abby in a soft sided carrier and placed her on my bedside table. When she got big enough, she started sleeping with us. She doesn't have a problem with her crate now and never has, although she's rarely in it.
