| Neutering I was wondering when you all suggest getting boys neutered. The vet said some people do it as early as 4 months and some wait till 7 months. What is best? Why do you do it at 4 months that seems too young!

| Sorry I don't really know myself, I'm not an expert, I had mine neutered at 6 months and that was what the vet suggested.. according to him at 6 mths they are mature enough to do it right, something to do with sperm counts..

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey was 5 months old, we wanted to do it before marking became a problem, and yet late enough so that retained baby teeth could be removed. Yorkies often have to have baby teeth removed, and can cause a real problem if permanent teeth come in with baby teeth still there. Since this has to be done under anesthetic, the vet wanted to do it in one procedure. If I were you, I would ask my vet about this, and see what he recommends. I haven't heard the theory on sperm counts, but I know that they have to wait until testicles drop, some are doing it very young, but because of the teeth issue, I believe it's best to wait.

| Yes, 6 months is what I though but my vet said some people like to do it early before they ever lift their leg or get the urge to hump. Keeping in mind she will not do anything until he is a good weight, which he will have no problem with.

| I am not neutering my little guy because I am to afraid of losing him when they put him under. It maybe different from dog to dog because mine does not do the marking/spraying, humping (sometimes a stuffy), aggression etc. Therefore, I see no reason to take the risk of him being neutered.

| I totally agree with Nancy1999's post. My vet is doing Elvis at 7 months, said that then there would be enough testosterone circulating in his system to help protect him...that's all I know about that. I am glad that we're waiting because he was beginning to have double row of teeth, now he is losing them, plus some back teeth, but there may still be some baby teeth left and the vet can pull them at that time.

YT 1000 Club Member | Nicole I had Leo and Dante done at 5 months. I asked my vet the same question that you asked here and It had something to do with both of their testes being dropped. Plus they were both at really good weights. As for the leg lifting there is no guarantee it won't happen. Both my boys lift but they also look to make sure they don't go off the pad. And from some posts I have read on here some neutered still end up humping either another dog or a favorite toy.

Lifting the leg is not the same as marking, many neutered males lift the leg.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | In that case, you may not want to neuter him.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | My vet will not considered neutering/spaying until 6 months due to their size. And yes...marking and cocking their legs are two seperate things. My female MARKS...my middle "child" Reese (male)...does not and only started recently lifting his leg..baby Reggie is a marker at 5 1/2 months old. Lots of tinkle...everywhere is marking. An un-neutered sexually mature male will make every attempt to escape should a female in your neighborhood ever go into heat. As kids...we had a beagle who would travel MILES to get to one. Once he was completely across a river...
