| I almost lost Sophie.. never will i put another collar on my little baby's neck! but i do blame myself for being so absent minded and, well, stupid. it was only for an hour, at most, but i had to leave sophie at home because unfortnately there are places that don't allow my baby. In a hurry, i put her in the bathroom -- as usual, gave her water and some toys to keep her occupied. But little sophie had bigger plans, to try and chew on her collar. Well, when i got home, i heard screaming coming from the back bathroom. My mom (who had returned home before me, thank god) was in the bathroom with a pair of scissors, trying to cut the collar off. Apparently, sophie had the collar stuck in her mouth, and couldn't get it out. She was freaking out. I always correct sophie when i see her try to chew her collar, and usually i take the collar off before i leave her, but this particular day -- i was so rushed that i forgot to, and also forgot my purse with my drivers license. How unfortunate that the one time i forget, she decides to chew on it and nearly kill herself. there was a lot of blood on her face and paws, which later we found not to be associated with the collar incident, but rather her losing her puppy teeth, because today she had another of her episodes, where she starts pawing at her teeth, and i saw blood on her paws. So i was about to take her to the vet when she spit out her tooth. I was so relieved to see it was not something more serious. i feel like such a horrible person, and i keep thinking about it, and beating myself up over it. Everytime i look at her, i know she doesn't understand what happened, and i cry because i was careless and i almost caused that innocent puppy to lose her life. I am now a paranoid mother. I hate leaving her alone, when i do, all these horrible thoughts cross my mind. For the most part, though, she never leaves my side, but today i have to leave her to visit my brother in the hospital. so i am a little nervous.. anyway, i am sorry this turned out to be such a long post, but i felt such guilt, i had to let it off my chest.

| i am SO glad that you got something from this story. it is absolutely horrible to watch your baby in pain. I am glad my mother was able to deal with this as i would have been too beside myself to even think. That little dog is my world, and i believe that if i lose her, another yorkie like her would never replace her in a million years. she's just too perfect for words.

| Count your blessings, your baby is ok. Your baby is very fortunate to have a mommie that cares like you do. I guarantee you one thing...it won't happen again now will it? So....you're a good mommie. Go buy him some new toys..it will at least make you feel better!

| i think all is fine. i bathed her immediately (this happened friday, by the way) to check for any cuts or scratches. then, i fed her some of her soft puppy food, and she ate it fine. so i think more than anything, she was scared. however she may have lost some brain cells due to lack of oxygen, or maybe she was already that ditzy ha. i'm kidding

| Your a wonderful mommy. Accidents can and do happen to anyone. If anyone want's to let their dogs wear collars, then make sure you can only put index and middle finger under the collar. Don't let it be really loose. Hugs to your baby. |

| I really sorry about your scare! I'm glad she is OK. They can hang themselves too. I always recommend a halter, never a collar. Much safer and better for their trachea. |

| wow... this makes me nervous because Kash wears a collar all day while i'm gone, but nothing bad has ever happened. i don't think he even notices it's on him because he's never tried to bite it off or anything... but after reading this thread, it makes me wonder if i should only put it on him while i'm at home... the only reason he wears it is because it has a bell on it, and i need to be able to hear him (wherever he may be). when i first got him, i accidentally kicked him a couple of times while walking because i didn't know he was so close to my feet. so, i put a collar with a bell on him, and now i can hear if he's near me, and avoid stepping on him! lol. but i guess it's not a necessity if i'm not home. i know that just because nothing bad has happened so far, doesn't mean it won't in the future! so the collar is staying off while he's home alone. thanks for this thread and opening my eyes to my ignorance!

| So glad your little one was OK. This happend to me but I was in the house and Alfie was quite small at the time and he somehow got the collar stuck n his teeth and he was quite distraught!!! So I never leave a collar on ever if Iam not there and you wont do it again as you will never forget it , at least there was no harm done so dont beat yourself up about it.

| I am so glad Sophie will be ok. I am not a believer in collar's for decrative purposes on any puppy for this reason. It only takes a second for a little one to get into a situation where it can choke. Sophie was lucky. A lesson well learned I'm sure. Don't feel guilty, you did'nt do it deliberately. Hugs to Sophie and you, |
