| retraining Okay, so I admit Tobie is probably more spoiled than he should be so we are trying to re-establish the alpha dog...me...by me going into doors first and eating first, etc....he seems kinda scared when I reach for him and I don't punsh him other than verbally....any suggestions, or is it just a yorkie thing to shrink back like that when you reach for them? |

| No, cowering when you reach for him isn't really a "yorkie thing". What kind of behaviors are you trying to change? What is he doing that makes you say he is spoiled? While eating first, going through doors first, etc make us feel that we are top dog, I'm not sure that teaches the dog anything other than "Okay, mom is acting a little weird here. What gives?" I think it's better to focus on specific behaviors and try to modify those.

| I think I agree and disagree. I've seen and heard numerous times that the alpha dog eats first and leads, so I would continue to do that, while also working on specific behaviors...again, what are they? |

For the shrinking back - are you picking him up a lot?? Try treating him like a big dog and not just picking him up. Ignore him and let him come to you. I know if mine are not in the mood to be picked up they will scoot out of the way. If i need to brush them or something I just go get the treat can and they are much happier to do whatever i want.
