No, cowering when you reach for him isn't really a "yorkie thing".
What kind of behaviors are you trying to change? What is he doing that makes you say he is spoiled?
While eating first, going through doors first, etc make us feel that we are top dog, I'm not sure that teaches the dog anything other than "Okay, mom is acting a little weird here. What gives?" I think it's better to focus on specific behaviors and try to modify those.
