Even IF that is true for "packs" dogs know we are not dogs. Have your dog sit before you set down their food. Ask them to sit before you pet them or throw their ball. Teach them some obedience commands. I will randomly walk over to Loki and ask him to drop his toy, reach down, look at it, and toss it back. If he's on the couch I will occasionally ask him to get off, then invite him back up. They just need to learn they need to listen you.

For the shrinking back - are you picking him up a lot?? Try treating him like a big dog and not just picking him up. Ignore him and let him come to you. I know if mine are not in the mood to be picked up they will scoot out of the way. If i need to brush them or something I just go get the treat can and they are much happier to do whatever i want.
