Housebreaking advice needed I'm due to get my puppy in a couple of weeks and I'd really like to have a plan together before then. I realize it may have to be tweaked along the way, but I'll be a lot less stressed if I know what I'm trying. I work, but will be able to come home during lunch for a while. With the price of gas, I'd like to have that time be as short as possible. My two choices are to put her in a crate all day or to put her in a large bathtub that we do not use. If I put her in a crate, I would not use the pads, I'd be taking her outside to pee. If I use the tub, she'll have room to play during the day, but she'll get used to using puppy pads. I'm hoping I could housebreak her totally after she got a little older. In a perfect world, I'd love for her to learn that there's never a good time to potty in the house...ha!! But while I'm trying to minimize the stress on me, I'd like to minimize it on her as well. Any suggestions???? Thanks! Carla

So you want to teach her to go outside only ,right? This can be difficult if no one is there during the day. I know you will come by for lunch but Puppies pee all day long when they are young. If you put him/her in a crate without a pee pad ,you may end up coming home to a puppy in a crate full of pee and probably poop.He or she might have poop all over their paws andtummy from getting nervous/excited when you leave them alone. They can't help it and can't hold their little bladder for more than an hour at a time in the beginning. I am home during the day but I have chosen to housebreak them using pee pads. We have tick/flea problems because of several wooded areas by our home. I just got a puppy 2 weeks ago and he used the pee pad at his breeder's home. When he got to my house he went straight for the pee pad and has been using it since. I tried counting how often he pees and it must be like 11 times a day at least! I hope someone that works out of the house can give you tips on housebreaking outside only. I tried crating a pup once and taking it outside often to pee/poop but I got negative results so I taught her to use the pee pad. Good Luck, Genie,Cookie ,Lola & Angel

Outside only would be in a perfect world, but I'm not sure if that's an attainable goal if I've got to leave her alone. Like I said, I'm trying to lessen the stress on me and her both. If I have realistic expectations, things will be a lot less stressful. After talking with a girl here at work, I'm leaning towards keep her in the tub (similar in size to a pack n play) for a while. When she's older and able to hold it longer, then we'll work on outside. But I'm very open to more advice!!!! Thanks for your reply!! Carla

humm, if you puruse the Housetraining thread you will find many ask the same questions you are!! It all depends on the pup and each situation. I've had great luck w/ a crate. I work FT and go home at lunch and let the dogs out. Two of my dogs (Yorkie,11lbs, and golden) are housetrained. The pup is almost 6mos. (I've had him a little over 1mo) he is being crate trained and doing good. I would never leave a pup in a crate all day, especially a small one because as someone said, you may come home to a stinky dog/crate. As for the bathtub idea, humm..really all you can do is try the peepad. Be prepared the pup may not want to use it, may have fun tearing it up, or..with luck, use it everytime. Just a thought..You might think about using some masking tape to hold the peepad in place. Depending on your tub, if it is rounded at the bottom or slippery and the pad slips the pup could get nervous about that. I'm sure it will all be fine, but just be prepared for some trial, error, reward..keep your cool, remember this is a young pup who hasn't a total clue yet. Another thing that has helped me is I always take a couple vacation days after I bring home a pup, just to get them accumulated and see how they will react (IE: when crate training, I would put pup in for like 10min and see how it went, each time increasing the time). Imagine being a pup..away from everything familiar and then being home alone all day, it can be quite stressful..Sounds like you are researching and asking the right questions. Look forward to hearing your experiences and pictures plezzzz Kathy
