| Peeing but not Pooping outside! I am just now getting the potty training down with my 3 month old pup. He is going # 1 outside but will not poop outside. I lock him up in my bathroom at night with a wee wee pad and he allways does it on there (or close to it) and when I take him out he will pee outside. What can I do to get him to go poo out doors. Should I scold a little when I am picking up the wee wee pad in the morning if the poo is not on the pad? or just ignor it? He gets treats everytime he goes out side and praise but he has never went poo out there............I have learned alot from this site and the potty traing is working for the most part. I just want to thank you all so much for your help.

| Sorry I cannot help you much. Gracie is nearly 10 months and still won't poo outside unless it is an emergency and she just can't hold it any longer! Gracie will miss the pee pad when pooing, but she is very close to it so I don't scold her. As long as she doesn't do her business anywhere else in the house I am OK with that.

| Don't scold b/c he will have no idea what you are talking about. You have to catch them while they are doing it and move them to where you want them to go. My guy used to miss the pee pad area as well, but I noticed it was my fault. Mine tends to want to dig around and move the papers, so it was rolling or getting knocked off. I just added some extra paper and made it a little bigger and now it is working better. I also got house training spray, and sprayed a little on the pads. Eventhough the pads are "scented" the little extra seems to be helping.

I can not block him from going into the living room cause it is all open and connected to my kitchen. What can I do to get him to poop outside???

| don't scold your little one unless you catch him in the act, he will have no idea why you are dissapointed with him. when you take out to do pee pee are you vocalizing that along with going out and doing a poo poo??? These words seem to mean alot to my little man along with hurry up "it's cold" LMAO and he will go right away I have been babysitting my sister's little italian grey hound puppy this past week and half while she's been away and even the puppy seems to understand where I'm coming from. Don't get me wrong, I feel like I'm back to day one with my little one going through this with her baby......... doing pee pee on the kitchen floor etc.. She will be back on Sunday, thank goodness s

| Scolding puppies for going poo in the wrong place will only make them think they are doing something bad and will try to hide from you when they are going. So you will only make it worse. The only thing you can do is watch the puppy carefully to catch her in the act. We tether our puppy when in the house with the leash on ourselves, using the extending leash. That way she doesn't get to go hide to do her business. And when she starts taking the position, we rush her outside to go and then give her tons of praise and treats afterward, like she'd done it all on her own. That way she'll figure "Oooooh! Poo outside = treats!" That's when the lightbulb goes off in their heads and they actually "get" it! |

| No I stand out in the yard with him. I praise him when he goes pee and after he's done I tell him to go poo poo but he just runs around the yard and plays. after about 20 minutes i take him back in the house and try again about 30 minutes later. How is the proper why to scold when I do catch him in the at of pooing on the floor?

| I really don't think there is any way to scold a puppy. Dogs are extreeeeemley intuitive, so they sense when you are displeased anyway. In her book, "Don't Shoot The Dog" Karen Pryor who is a renowned professional animal trainer, says that it's best to just ignore what the animal does wrong, and make a big hullaballoo when they do the right thing, or even when they come close to doing the right thing! According to her that is the fastest way to get the animal to learn what they are supposed to do. Since dogs always want to please you, not displease you, scolding is really not necessary. When Pookie pees or poos in the wrong place, she knows without us saying a word that we aren't happy. She looks at us with this guilty look, like, "I'm sowwy mommy, I did it again, I couldn't hewp it!" And she hovers around while we clean it up, looking for all the world like she's going to get swatted, tho we've never laid a hand on her or even raised our voices to her. So according to a real pro, that's the best way to handle it. Scolding is more for our benefit, not for hers. |

| I caught my puppy 3x going poopers...........literally CAUGHT him, one time he hadn't even quite squeezed it out yet...........but my way of SCOLDING, isn't really SCOLDING, but I CAUGHT HIM....yelled "NO, NAUGHTY!!!!!!!!", grabbed the turd in ANYTHING I could find at that second (piece of paper, tissue, napkin........ANYTHING) Grabbed him, and put the turd RIGHT BY HIS FACE (not touching his face, just close enough so that he was stuck smelling the thing until we got outside) and put the poo where he was SUPPOSE TO GO. All the while I was bringing him out I was saying "POOPERS OUTSIDE" over and over again. He knows my word for ANYTHING he does wrong.......in a REALLY LOW VOICE I say "NAUGHTY" and he then goes down low and says he's sorry My lil guy was pretty easy to train......he was FULLY trained and going to the door JUST BEFORE he turned 4 months. |

| Thats great, Thanks for all the information. I am hopeing that with the nicer weather and more outside time (even if he is just running around the yard playing) He will eventually go poo outside and when he does I will ba there to praise him and give him treats and throw him a mini party like I do when he pees outside. I really think that is all it is going to take. Thats all it took for him to start peeing outside. The first time was allmost like winning the lottery for a puppy. He got EVERYTHING he wanted......treats, lovins, praise, and didn't have to go back in the bathroom......where I lock him when he is not behaveing and where he sleeps at night cause he HATES crates, All he does is cry in them.

| Brw, according to that same book, it's the attention that is a reward. So any attention to the behavior, good or bad is a reward in itself. That is why it's best to ignore the wrong behavior entirely and only give attention, positive attention, to the right behavior. It also seems to take these little dogs up to a year old to get it down right *sigh* so be patient. |

| I know what you're going through. Harley had the poo problem when he was really little but I discovered the cure (for him atleast) After he goes pee pee get him to run around a lot to get him moving. I started taking Harleys fav toy outside and tossing it about for him to chase and run around w/ and after he got going 'boom!' it hit him and he realized wow, I need to poo! Afterwards make sure to reward and keep it up. Don't bring him in until he's done his deed. lol That might sound dumb but it worked for me so I would atleast try it!
