| 2.5 year old yorkie peeing indoors! Hi, We got Jess from a rescue home about 7 weeks ago. Now and again se will pee in the house, maybe once every 10 days. We take her out into the garden every hour, but she rarely does anything other than wait to go in again. When we take her on a walk (which she gets twice a day), she does a real big pee just after we start out, so it is almost like she is holding it in until walkies. Could really do with some advice on this one, we praise her whenever she pee's outside. Help please.. |

| I'm sorry, I can't offer much help. I got Coco when she was a year old and now she's about 18 months. She's fine during the day when I'm not home, but when I'm home at night, even if I take her out every two hours, she still pees on the floor sometimes. I reward her everytime she goes outside. A trainer told me to scatter her food where she tends to pee because apparently dogs don't like to pee where they eat. It worked for a while, and now it's not working as well. When I bought her, the woman who sold her to me told me she was housebroken, but obviously she's not. She doesn't know how to ask to go outside because there was a fenced in yard where she spent her first year. That's part of the problem. |

| In addition to praising her for appropriate pottying, give a her a yummy treat, too. And make sure your praise is done in an excited, little girl voice. Not just "good dog", but "You are the best dog in the whole world! I can't believe how smart you are! What a good puppy!". If you are able to collect any pee or poo from accidents in the house, take it outside and put it in the garden where you want your pup to potty. Dogs often stimulate themselves to "go", by smelling old excrement. I'm betting she'll be completely housebroken soon. She seems to have the general idea. Good luck!

Agreeing w/FirstYorkie - collect some from a house accident, or a 'walkie', and plant it in the garden.

| Unfortunately I live in a condo without any kind of a yard to let her out to and no garden. So I really have to just guess when she might need to go and then take her for a walk. And I have been giving her treats when she goes outside too. It's funny, my other yorkie is the same age (a year and a half) and completely trained. I have to give her treats too b/c I can't do it for one and not the other. So she has a very sweet deal. |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | I wonder if... ...sometimes we might expect too much from small bladders? My Abigail (13months) is trained to paper indoors, and I've noticed that when the urge hits her she hurry hurry's to get to her potty paper, as though she just can't wait another second. Small breeds probably need access to outdoors several times per day.

| It's so hard to know. My other yorkie, Zoe, is the same age as Coco, but weighs ten pounds. I'm not sure if weight has anything to do with it, but she never has accidents and doesn't need to go outside nearly as much as Coco. I think I just have to be patient with her. I've been praising her more enthusiastically when she goes outside. Maybe that will help. |
