Default Potty training help?

My new little guy seems to have a very small bladder... I've noticed little spots around the house. I have a pee pad in the kitchen which they have access to all the time. The new little guy is not having any luck with the pee pads. To train him, should I keep him locked in the kitchen until he has it mastered? I tried keeping him in there this morning, but he just started crying.

Advice?

How old is? frequent peeing in young puppies is very common. You need to keep him confined to a small area until you get him trained.

Mine are 5 and 6 months and they are still confined to the kitchen for most of the day.

Since yours has already had the run of the house, he might protest to the confnement, but he'll get used to it.

I had him in the kitchen to begin with, but when he saw the other one out he started whining more... I'll put him back in there though.

Default Potty training

Hi there,

did you end up finding a solution to your problem? I would like to see if it has gotten better for you because me and my girlfriend just bought a puppy 3 weeks ago and he goes everywhere. Let me know if you have

Default Potty Training Help?

Hi, I am having similar problems like yours. The one thing I learned from a great trainer when I had a larger dog was this... A puppy should be on a leash (4-6ft soft leash) at all times while in the house. She should also be at your side, under your foot. Meaning whatever you are doing, your puppy is at your foot as you have your foot on the leash. Never give a puppy the run of the house or even the run of the kitchen or other small room. IF she cannot be at your side under foot, then she should be in her crate or outside. That's it - underfoot at your side, in the crate or outside. When I started my large dog on this method I thought the trainder was nuts. The larger dog would not go in a crate because he was adopted and had issues, but he was house broken. I didn't let him have the run of the house until I could trust him not getting into trouble or peeing inside. Having your puppy at your side

So as I am typing this, my Summer is on her leash sleeping, as I hold the leash down under my foot. When she wakes up, she will have to pee and I immediately take her outside. She pees immediately and then we play for awhile, keeping the leash on. Another reason to keep her on the leash is, if you do see her squatting to poo, you can just grab the end of the leash, give it a quick tug and yell NO, scoop her up and take her outside. This way you catch her in the act of the bad behaviour immediately and she knows immediately that it is wrong. After she's pood and peed on your rug, it's too late to scold her. This is what works for me. I've made Summer's crate only big enough for her to sleep by putting a box in the back of the crate. Before I did this she would just poop in the back of the crate and sleep in the front. When she has to pee or poo while in the crate now, she scratches at the box because she wants to get back there where she can relieve herself and not lay in it. When the scrathing starts, I take her out.

My only wish is that when she is under my foot on the leash, that she would let me know that she has to pee because a few times she has woken up, and I didn't feel the leash move or see her move and she has peed, right there next to me. This is frustrating. I wish she would just scratch my leg or something, to let me know that she has to pee when she is under my foot.

She still wakes up once a night to go outside. She is 3-1/2 months now and even when I don't give her water or food LONG before bedtime, she still needs to get outside at 3-4am in the morning. Last night I had her outside from 10-11m playing hoping that she would be so tired that she would sleep through. Sure enough, at 3:30 she started scratching and I took her out to pee. I'm puzzled, where did the pee come from. She didn't have water since 8m and she was outside peeing and playing until 11pm???

I know...., she's just a baby, but will I ever get a full night's sleep? Will she ever let me know on her own that she has to go outside to relieve herself?

I hope these suggestions help a bit.

I like that!!! That leash sounds like a good idea. The good thing is that our baby likes..i mean loves following us everywhere we go. The only down fall for us is that we are at work from 8-1pm and then for lunch we go home to feed him and play with him for an hour.. and then from 2-6:30pm we are back at work. So we leave him alone for such a long time. At first we would leave him in the bathroom with a baby gate and suddenly one day we found him outside in the living room wondering around. We were puzzled on how he got out. Well we found out that he had climbed the baby fence and jumped out. So then we decided to leave him in the bathroom with the door closed (mind you the bathroom is a pretty big spacious bathroom).
Well it worked for one day and the following work day we came home and we found blood on the floor...well guess what he was scratching on the door trying to get out that he made his paws bleed. We were so sad we didnt want him to get hurt anymore. We felt horrible that we brought him home knowing we work 5 days a week and 9 hours a day... but me and my girlfriend fell in love with him... we were sad at the fact that he was getting hurt and crying everytime we would leave in the morning...We were confused because we didnt know if we should just give him a better home or find a solution to keep him with us.... We came up with a solution to keep him because we didnt want to let him go.. We decided to expand his space... This is what we did...since we live in a 2 bedroom condo with 2 bathrooms we have a pretty long hall way so what we did is we gave him the freedom to roam around the hall way and put a gate so that he cant get to the living room....well that didnt work.... he decided to scratch all three doors...the guest room, our room door and the bathroom...yea there was more blood on the floor this time...Sooo what we did this Monday when we came home for lunch and saw blood on everydoor step is we just let him roam free throughout the house...
We basically have tile flooring all over the house so we were more concerned about him not getting hurt then having to come home and clean his mess....
Basically as of yesterday he did something really really good...Since he sleeps with us in our room (of course on his own little bed) every morning when we wake up we automatically take him outside to the patio and he goes pee..right way! We praise him when he does so....We have been doing that for 2 weeks now. So last night when we were home hanging out we noticed that he kept going to the sliding door that leads to the patio...so my girlfriend and i stared at eachother in surprise...so my girlfriend goes and opens the sliding door and sure enough he went outside to pee...and later he went outside to take care of his business too....BUT.... I dont know if we are doing the right thing by letting him roam free... The reason i say that is because he is not consistant..The last time we thought he was getting use to his pee pad...but that only lasted 2-3 days...and then he just started going everywhere.. I am hoping that he continues going outside...and today is his 2nd day of freedom in the house...so we have yet to find out if we will be going home to a messy house or if he was a good boy and went outside...

I dont know what else to do because most of it is our fault. I want to crate train him as many other people have mentioned but i am afraid he will go crazy..the reason I say that is because of his actions that we have seen with the whole bathroom door and him making himself bleed..I dont want to confuse the little guy now that we have let him take the house to himself....
What do you think can be done since we are not home during the week...until 630pm of course... we spend the whole weekend with him and take him everywhere with us, but I know he needs more attention...let me know what you think...

Default Potty Training Help?

I know what it's like to have a dog that hates the crate. I mentioned that I had a larger dog that I adopted with issues and he hated the crate. He went wild when he was in there. He pooped all over it and then it was like he threw it all over the walls of the room the crate was in. I don't know how he did it but is was a mess everytime. He would shred the blanket that was in there. He would also be bleeding on his face because he was trying to eat his way out of the metal crate!!!! It was awful!
I don't know what to tell you, but I know what my trainer would tell you. He would say, Just put him in there, close the gate and walk away. No blankets, food or water since he destroys everything. Would it be possible for you to get a friend, a responsible 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grader in your neighborhood that wants to make a few bucks a week, to come over and take him out while you are at work?

The trainer that my big dog was sent to before I picked him up for adoption also crate trained dogs, and there were many puppies at his place being crate trained because the owners just didn't have the patience to do it. Could you try something like that? Our trainer had our big dog crate trained perfectly, but I was the one that ruined it because I felt sorry for him. The day I left him out of the crate was the last day he ever went back in it willingly. A hugh mistake that was. The trainer told me not to let him run the house, but I didn't listen. He didn't destroy anything, but I would find poops in places.

I dread it when my kids all go back to school and I have to leave Summer in her crate because I have to go into the office. Those will be long time periods for her and I am hoping that my husband can run home and pay some attention to her.

Well, I have to leave for work, I hope some of these suggestions have helped. Believe me, I feel your pain.

Hi! Your yorkie is so cute...yeah we have tried the pee pee pads and he used it for like...3 days..he tricked us. we left it in the same spot and all of a sudden after 3 days of doing good he decides to go everywhere. Lately we have the pooping straight. He goes outside and takes care of his business but when it comes to peeing...he goes anywhere and everywhere. I even bought this spray to spray on the pee pads. It says its to catch the puppies attention and it has some odors in it that helps the puppy pee there. I have been doing that put he still doesnt pee in his pee pad. What did you do?
