| Regression after adoption I adopted a Yorkie mix. He appears more Yorkie but has some Pom in him. We picked him up today. His foster mom had puppy pad trained him. When we brought him home, he went and peed immediately on the puppy pad. We made a big deal and praised him. I don't have treats (would love any advice on that). But in the next 2-3 hours, he peed twice more on the floor and the carpet I keep putting him on his puppy pad every 20-30 minutes but he hasn't used it again. I know he is reacting to a new place and the stress for leaving his foster mom. I just wanted to make sure I start out on the right foot. He also didn't eat his morning meal. I left it out in case he wanted it but he hasn't eaten it yet. He seems pretty playful and wants to follow me around the house. But he keeps biting my toes or my hands when I pet him. I keep handing him chew toys but he ignores them and tries to bite me again. Any advice? This is our first puppy ever so I want to do the right thing! Thanks so much for you help |

| Welcome to YT and thank you for rescuing. You're right on he's in a new home, new smells, you are new to him, he needs adjust time. When he pees other then the pad, take the pad to the pee, adsorb the pee with the pad, place the pad back where it belongs, get the pup, place him on the pad, using the commands words "pee pee on the pad", or what ever words you use, same with the poop, pick up the poop, place it on the pad, pick up the pup, place him on the pad, give the command word "poo-poo on the pad" or what ever words you use. Treats, you can boil boneless chicken breast and give small bits for rewards, or frozen cut beans or peas, or buy doggie treats, silly, happy, crazy, hand clapping praise, praise, praise works wonders. He's confused right now being in a new home, new family, patience is a must, don't scold, raise your voice, yell, speak in firm voice when correcting potty boo-boos. He will get it. When he bites, firmly say "no biting" they are like 5 y/o and you're the new baby sitter, they are going to see how far they can go with you, you have to set the ground rules. When you play with him and he bites tell him in a firm tone NO BITING. I have an adopted boy 20 months now, I went through the biting, not a play bite but a I WANT MY OWN WAY BITE, one week later no more biting. Potty issues, he was house broken, he whines to let me know he needs OUT. Your command words must be consistent, choose what words you want to use and STAY with those words, don't change them, keep in mind, you don't know what prev. owner used, or you can contact the foster, ask them what command words were used and use them. Keep him confined to a small area where his pee pad is or put his pee pad in a small area until he is pee pad trained 100%, do not give him free roam of the house if you cannot supervise. Many members use x-pens or crates, hopefully they will come along and offer up advise on this, I never used either of them.

| Charua, Congratulations on getting your very first puppy ever. Sounds like a cute one. Could you post some pictures of the little one for us to see? Welcome to YT and I hope you enjoy your membership here. I hope things will go better for you with little Charua and his pee problem and the biting. Best wishes to you and a good long healthy life with your new one.

| Advice above was good. I personally would use an X-pen to confine him, with a potty pad in it, if you can't actively supervise him. Put a bed and a toy or two in as well. Be patient with him, puppies can't hold it long and small dogs can be hard to housebreak. If he does have an accident and you see him (he has to be actually having the accident or you will just scare him), tell him NO firmly, pick him up and place him on the pad, say "go potty" and then if he does go on the pad (even if it sort of was accidental) treat and praise. If you do not catch him in the act, clean it up and pretend nothing happened- he won't remember what he did, so if you punish him he will just get scared. As for the biting. Replace your hand with a toy every time- I'd keep a few little toys in my pocket. If he can't be redirected, move away from him for a short time. He will learn that appropriate play (not biting) gets attention, and biting makes you ignore him. |

| Thanks for the replies. We are so new to this and overwhelmed. We have considered maybe we aren't going to be able to do this. He is such a sweet boy though and I am hoping we can all learn together. He seems to prefer to use the bathroom outside. My husband happened to open the back door yesterday morning and he ran outside and peed and pooped. It worked out the whole day but we had to take him every 30-45 minutes. Today he had two accidents. One in the house and one in the expen on the floor (not on his puppy pad). Both accidents were 20 minutes from the last time he peed outside. We took him to the vet on Friday and he is basically healthy (he had ear mites that were treated and an eye infection that we are treating with drops). We did take a fecal sample in but they didn't take a urine sample. We have been writing down his schedule and he appears to pee 15-20 times a day. That's a lot! Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it. I attached a few pics. |
