And this is exactly why, all of my many, many, many pups through the years are well socialized but separated when I have small children and company at my home. For the few hours they are here. I always let them greet and meet etc., but I just feel better.

When I was about that boys age (I'm 34 now) I was bitten on the side of my face by a Great Dane. Scar next tomy right ear about 1 1/2 long. But i deserved it. I put my face in his space while he was eating and this was a neighbors dog I played with on my way home daily.

Proper training and socializing is one thing but if the dog feels threatened they will bite. It's in their nature. I believe more parents need to take responsibility for their children's actions and mistakes and quit blaming the dogs.

Thing we don't see is the whole story. How do we know that boy didn't make a sudden move or gesture that made that pup fearful to where it bit.

Is it a law to euthanize a dog if it had biting someone?

No but they say once a dog taste blood they are considered high risk with probable risk of biting again. I think the owners put the dog down to save face for future rebuttal.

Not to place blame or anything, the story was not really clear. Neither the parent or the dog owner said exactly what happened.

I know Bentley is a good jumper. But I can't imagine him being able to jump high enough to bite even a 9 year old in the face.

Was he down on the ground with the dog? Especially at a young age even an owner should not be right at eye level on the ground with the dog. Makes the dog think they are your equal.

Guess we will never know the full story.

Not only is this a lesson in socializing and properly training a dog, but also children. My kids were very young when Petsmart first came to town. I always told my kids to ASK before approaching a dog even on a leash(and we were a cat family not dog so my girls had no regular exposure to dogs). And also explained the proper way to introduce themselves to the dog if they get the ok. I used to get compliments all the time from dog owners about my polite little 4 year old asking if it was ok to pet their dog, and that most adults never even thought to ask first.

Totally senseless on both parts I believe the blame if truth be told is not just at the dog owner's feet and a young dog lost its life in the process.

It is sad story, but definitely can't just blame the dog, since I HIGHLY doubt that the boy was just passing by and the dog attacked. I think in this case you can blame the "pet parent" and the parent of the boy, who did not supervise their kids properly.

Such a sad story......I feel there has to be more to the story. The boy had to be at face level. What was the kid doing to cause the yorkie to bite that viciously! Children need to be taught how to approach a dog....first thing they need to do is "ask"! When I am out in public, I have so many children run up to me and just start petting and touching my yorkies! Sometimes they startle me at how quick and rude they are! I was walking my puppies over the weekend. We were at my daughters apartment and some children were outside playing. They asked to pet them but I said no because they need to to go potty. As we walked around the kids stayed in the area. My granddaughter (9yrs) was walking one and me the other. While I stood right there one of the kids ran up to Tatiana and picked her up! I immediately reprimanded him about picking up a strange dog! Tatiana was on a leash and the kid was that quick!!! This is how some of these children get bit! In my opinion, is not the dogs fault when something like this happens! Sorry, I just needed to get this rant out!

That poor pup! It makes me sick to constantly see animals pay the price for owners' lack of knowledge, laziness, or just sheer stupidity.

It's so much easier to teach a pup than a small child! Sam will have been with us 3 months tomorrow, and it's still an every day referee job between he and Sarah. She knows not to pick him up or put her hands on his neck, but she still does things that irritate him and scare the crap out of me. It's everything from getting rough when she pets to trying to take his toys to disturbing him when he's asleep.

A few years ago my sister had to have her 12 year old lab put to sleep because it bit a little boy. It had grown up with my niece and all the family children and never shown sign of aggression. After it was put to sleep she found out from a neighbor that some kids who lived behind her had been terrorizing her dog by poking it with sticks through the fence only the week before. It is sad that our pets have to pay for people not teaching their children how to treat animals.
