| Pup hates baths Hi, everyone! Hubby and I got a new pup, Rocky, about three weeks ago. He's almost four months old. The first time I gave him a bath, he didn't like it and tried to jump out of tub. I was very gentle and talked to him in a quiet manner, but he still hated it. i always make sure the water is not too hot and draw his bath before he gets in. Yesterday, I gave him another bath and this time he was worse. He kept trying to jump out and I could tell he was scared, which I can understand. However, he turned around and made a biting gesture towards my hand, which didn't even remotely hurt and barely grazed my skin if anything. I told him a firm "no" at the action. I can't help but still feel hurt and a little taken back by the biting gesture though. It's not something I want to happen again. I've never had a puppy this young to know if this is normal behavior. His gentle play biting on us has decreased greatly and whenever he goes for my hands when we play I give him a bone and he chews on that instead. He has always been very gentle if he does play bite, and is learning. I don't know if any of you have experienced this and if it is something I should be concerned about. I just wrote it off to him being and puppy and unfamiliar with the bathtub. All I have to go on is my baby Ace never acted like that, and he hated baths too. However, Ace was also six months when we got him, so I know that is also a factor. Any advice or experiences would be helpful. Thanks, my fellow yorkie parents!! |

YT 500 Club Member | I think he is probably just scared. Just keep telling himwhat a good boy he is the whole bath time and then after the bath give him a treat. Its just going to take some time for him to get use to a bath, maybe put a towel on the bottom of the tub so he will feel more secure |

| My dogs never liked bathing at first. (Most hated the blow drier too, double whammie for grooming day!!!) What I did was have an extra person available to hold the pup gently, both talking very calmly to him or her. Make it quick as possible!! (Why the extra person is nice, you aren't fighting a very slipper squirming 3 pound worm, while trying to bathe, rince and repeat.) After the bathing, brushing and blow drying, offer a couple of nice treats, that he or she ONLY gets after the bath. Eventually they do calm down, may never really love it, but will tolerate it!! Mine get bathed, blow dried and brushed every 10 days, so they learn to put up with it. One fo mine actually likes it! Miracles do happen!

| Have you tried getting in the tub with him and holding him on your lap? Just a thought. Might help calm him until he's older and a little more accustomed to it. |

| I make sure to bathe them every week when they are pups so they get used to it, you can even skip the full shampoo to make it shorter and get them in the routine. I remember Ziva(3) growling horribly at me and snapping when I pulled the towel over her eyes -she likes her bath now . Abby(1) still hates a bath but would never consider the biting. |

| My Mia is like a cat in the bath. I've posted before. I have no idea why but obviously something happened before I got her and quite frankly, pups never forget a damn thing...I have tried every single thing, even taking her in with me (I will only admitt that here)...anyways, she is slightly better if I get down to business and get her out quickly! Last night was hysterical cuz shes long legged, she escaped on me in a blink, I scooped her up and put her back in, got my arms all clawed up got her out, and then put Mini in for her bath...Mini is the perfect angel during bath...so I'm rinsing her and lo and behold doesn't Mia come galloping in the room and jump IN the tub? Maybe its got to be on her terms??? lol Try all the tips, I think you'll figure the best method with trial and error. My Mia has to have a bath each week cuz of Miss Mini's allergies....so if I come across a method that actually works I will get back to you...ho hum.....

Yorkie Yakker | my 5 month old puppy still does not like baths, but has gotten much better with time. At first he would literally do whatever it took to jump out of the bath, and he is a very friendly dog, but during bath time is the only time i noticed him try to nip at me to get out- That was the worst part. I think taking him to this certain grooming salon, run by one of the big pet store chain companys was what traumatized him.The women were always kind of abrupt and bordering rude to me (the two times i went), but i figured they obviously just liked animals company over people, as they were dog groomers. But he got even more terrified of baths it seemed so i just stopped going there, and decided to clip/groom him myself, and since then his weekly baths have gotten slowly better.

| I don't mean to make light of your situation but my Maddie Jo has always hated a bath too. She'll be 5 this month and, although she has calmed down in the sink, she still gives me the stink eye big time when I give her a bath! She doesn't shake the water off when she gets out...she just lays on the towel or her bed and continues to give me the stink eye. She loves to be brushed and the blow dryer is 'o.k.' but she absolutely hates to get wet...not only in the sink but boy does she look 'offended' when I make her go out in the rain, even a sprinkle, and our overhang is 2 1/2 or 3 feet so she stays under that but she still gives me dirty looks until I let her in. So, it did get better for us...yah, dirty looks are better than trying to use a sprayer on a wildcat! Good luck |
