| Calling all pad training experts We have two ten week babies and we are potty trainingto go outside. We crate them as well and have a great play pen for them with pads. They go great on the pads in the pen however they dont get it outside of the pen. We have never trained small dogs before so we want all the advice you experts can give. We would like them to be both indoor and outdoor trained and from reading on this forum it seems this is possible however we have carpet..is there any hope. Thanks experts |

| Hi and welcome to YT. My 2 are pad and outdoor trained. We did this as we boat and we like to anchor out. It is possible. How we did it was train on pad first...since yours are using pad, this will be help. You really need to pay attention and figure out their signs of when they need to potty. Once you see the signs, grab them immediately and place them on the pad. Once they are in the act, use a phrase that means "going potty". We use, "do your stuff". We have pads in hubby's garage and he takes them out first thing in the a.m. and throughout the night. This started last winter when we had 3' of snow. His garage is his man cave so he spends time out there and as a result, the dogs get to spend time with him while being able to potty. Once you figure out the signs, you much be diligent in putting them on the pad to potty. Do you know if they potty after eating? If so, watch them and place them on pad for that. Then praise, praise, praise, and then more praise. lol We praised and gave a small treat. After awhile, they would pee, run for a treat, and then go back and poop and run back for another treat. lol They are smart little boogers. Hope this helps and good luck! Paitence is another thing to have. It will happen, just give it time.

| ^^ Great advice from Mom to Hot Rod. Show your pups the pad often, use some keywords or phrases so that they learn "potty" or "potty on the pad." Praise is key! Show your pup how happy you are when they get it right.

| Just to warn you, your pups are very young and it will take a little time. At 10 weeks old, some breeders will not even send them home yet. Mine have always been pad trained, and I have never had a problem once they "get it". It takes a lot of repetition, especially when so young. I keep a pad in my laundry room off my family room. I keep it in a playpen. I also feed them in there. I put them in there and wait for them to potty. When they potty on the pads, lots of praise and a "nip" of something good to eat. Eventually they get good things happen when they "make" on the pads. You will eventually be able to let them loose in the house and just keep the playpen open for them to go in and make potty on their pad. I know what you mean, though. At first, it seems like they are not understanding. Hang in there, it will just click one day.
