This is a wonderful place to visit, share our experiences and thank god for all of the members that have a wealth of knowledge and experience for us as newbies.....I can tell you when I got Cooper I had questions all the time, and still do and I can not express how welcoming and helpful everyone has been. | Bell training I trained Zeke to use a tap bell like in the video. You could always put a bandaid around the inside to soften the sound. I had Zeke ring it every time he goes out, or I would ring it for him and say ring the bell. It did not take him long to catch on at all. Of course, he rings it every time he want to go out whether he has to go potty or just wants to go out. Zeke is only 7 pounds, by the way. |

| This is the way that I trained my German Shepherd and now am training Sasha to use the bell. I have a bird toy bell hanging with a shoe string on my backdoor. I ring the bell (shake the string or touch the bell to make a sound) and give the puppy a treat and say "good girl/boy" about every 2 hours or whatever timing that your puppy usually goes pee/poop. I let the puppy outside to pee/poop and they get another treat after they do their business. It takes about a week of consistancy, but the puppy gets the idea of ringing the bell, treat AND gets to go outside. Sasha is also scared of the bell, but will ring it while running around with her toys by accident and I will give her a treat and bring her out. 8 out of 10 times, she will potty even though it is before the normal 2 hour timing. Note: when bringing puppy out just to play, do not ring the bell. Say something like "Playtime" and go out without ringing the bell, so that the puppy doesn't associate ringing the bell just to go out and play. Good luck. |

| Bailey is a bell ringer!! Just like the video!! I got the idea from the Houstraining book. It suggested potty training to bells - so I chose a service bell - just like the video. Everyone laughs when "Princess" needs to go out! Its hilarious. I got mine at Office Depot - $5 We trained Bailey to use the bell simultaneous with potty training. Whenever she started to squat in the house, we scooped her up and took her paw to the bell and said "outside". She didn't like it either, at first - but she learned that it was a necessary part of training. The funny thing is that when we're in a room with no bell, she'll find the springy door stop thing and paw at that when she needs out. She's sooo smart!!

| We introduced the bell to Bailey while potty training - so she was 12 weeks old....

Thor's Human Donating Member | That's a good idea about putting a bandaid inside to soften the sound. I tried to get Thor to use a service bell, but he was just terrified of the noise. I think he'd rather stay inside all day then hear the ding. I spent weeks teaching him to "touch" the bell, where I'd treat him just for touching the sides, expecting that one day he would accidentally ring the bell, and I'd shower him with praise and treats and go from there. It worked perfectly, except after that one time he rang the bell by accident, he never, ever did it again. If I asked him to Touch the bell, he would crawl up to it and tap the side like it was a nuclear bomb. I eventually gave up and I use potty pads now. I would love for him to ring a bell, but a lot of dogs also succumb to "bell abuse", and literally will ring the bell every minute, just to get your attention. Thor still pees on his pad way more than necessary in hopes of getting extra treats, so I just don't think he and the bell are meant to be. |

| Sophie rings her bell! Sophie is trained to ring the bell to go pottie! Just like others, she was terrified of the sound at first! We were persistent and kept ringing it with her paw every time she ate, and said the words "let's go potty outside"! Sure enough, after about two weeks of making her ring the bell every time she went out to potty, she started ringing it herself! It's funny now, because if you don't come quick enough, she'll ring it 2-3 times and then look around for you! It really does work, because we even take the bell with us when she comes to the office or on a weekend trip in the RV! Just be persistent, and it works! Sophie's Mom |
