| Come Here Baxter... whenever you feel like it is a good time for me! I am having trouble getting Baxter to listen to the come command. He usually does fine with it until he gets distracted (especially outside in the backyard). I can call till the cows come home but he is going to finish whatever he is doing (usually smelling for more rabbit poo...ewww) before he comes running back to me all excited. Anyone have any suggestions on how to train the come command so that he will listen to it more? Soar Throated Walter |

| Maybe it the name. My Baxter won't come when called either. He spends all outside time on a leash. In the house he comes whenever he gets good and ready. My sister says he is a cat! I gave up long ago. He's 14 months old. Occasionally he comes when called but we think it is just a fluke. |

| A dog trainer told me that getting a dog to come to you when called is one of the hardest things for them to learn. Maybe taking an obedience class would help. I'm starting obedience training with my little one in a week...even though he does simple commands at home, it's hard for him to concentrate when there are other distractions....and learning to come when called will be one of the commands that will be taught. I'll share info once the classes start. |

| Great idea... I am considering taking Baxter to some classes after he has his full compliment of vaccinations. Maybe that will do the trick! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Keep treats in your pocket at ALL times. Using the word come...when he responds to you...he gets a treat. EVERY time. Eventually he will come on command without a reward. To this day...mine all think come = treat.

| I agree with the treat idea. Thats how i get molly to come when i need her to. I dont give her a treat every time though. When she is bringing the ball back to me, i give her a treat about every 5th time. She will always come back because she knows at some point she will get a reward. Its also a very useful way to get her to come to me if theres a big dog approaching. I just rattle the box with the treats in and she comes to me at top speed, and i can pick her up if i need to. |

| i've watched on dog training shows that the trainer would kneel down low and then call the dog, the dog would come running back! Treats are very good motivaters too Always use a positive high pitched voice and tell him what a wonderful, good boy he is .

| Thanks for the input!! I am going to start carrying the treats with me all the time. I figure it's worth a shot. I think I will start wit giving him a treat everytime and then slowly ween him off as he gets better at it. Thanks again everyone! This site is so helpful!! Walter |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey pretty tricky and even though he learned the "come means treat comand", he now makes sure I have a treat before he comes. I can't get the treat after he comes, I have to have it on me. I've never had a dog like this, most would always come, with no special training. I can yell "treat" and he'll come.

Thank you both so much. I have an animation program that comes with Paint shop pro, and I can take a movie and change it to a gif file. The file is way too big, for Yorkietalk, so I have to reduce it to only about 8 pictures, and that's the hard part. Another way to do it is to take a series of pictures from a movie. Most movie programs allow you to take a "snapshot" of one picture, and just put all the snapshots together in one file. Any animation program could do that.

| I agree - "come" is a command that should always be treated. Our trainer says "A dog that doesn't come is a dead dog" Yikes!!! Having treats in hand is not always practical - so our trainer taught me to use a key word. Mine is "yes". I say "yes" to mark good behavior - at the moment it happens. Kinda like the clicker method - but I don't have a clicker - so I use my voice (its always with me!). During the training phase, I said "yes" to every command Bailey did correctly, at the very moment she performed it. In the case of Come - say "yes" as the dog starts to head your way. (if I waited until afterwards to praise her with a treat, then she would be confused as to what she did correctly - so always mark good behavior as it happens) Once I say "yes" then I follow with a treat. "Yes" is my promise that she will get a treat. I never break that promise. The treat may be on me, or it may be in the house, or it may be in the freezer - but she ALWAYS gets a treat when I say Yes and she understands it!!! That said, Bailey is now 2 years old - so I don't say "yes" all the time. Good behavior is expected now - such as pottying outside, etc. But I still reward for Come and I always will. Good luck!
