| Newbie...Help....added question :) Hi! I am 18 years old and i got my Yorkie 2 days ago! My boyfriend bought him for me for valentines day. (What a sweetheart) I absolutely adore him! He is 10 weeks old. I am wondering how much to feed him. I'm getting many answers, some saying keep food for him out all the time but that way i would think it would be harder to keep track of potty time and others said feed him about a cup or so of food a day but split that up into four times...if that makes any sense, haha but also, I am starting to potty train him and I am wondering what is better/easier to do....Training pads or outside? And also, I am starting to crate train him. Any advice on that?? We will also be starting a training class the weekend after valentines day. Any advice will help! Thanks so much! |

| I used to always free feed, leave food out, but found it hard to keep track of who was eating what. I now feed in their crates twice a day (morning and night) with a little snack in the early afternoon. The food bags have suggested amounts for feeding on the package. My dogs (4 months to 2 1/2 yrs) all get 1/4 cup kibble at each feeding. If they don't eat it all, I throw it out, except for the youngest, who needs her food split in smaller servings, so she gets a chance to finish it. I hope this helps.

| When my baby was young, she had 3 feedings throughout the day, I believe 1/4 cup each time. She's now a free feed and gets 1/3 cup twice a day, but doesn't always eat the 2nd meal. She has grown sick of her current food and I'm not beginning transitioning between different types of brands/flavors to keep her interested in her food. When it comes to crate training, it can be very hard at times, especially if your baby starts crying when he's in there. They all touch our hearts when this happens and you want to cave in so bad to let them out, but you can't let him get the best of you if this happens. Create a schedule for him, after he eats take him outside to potty (if you choose to train him outside that is) if he doesn't go, crate him for about 10 minutes and take him back out. If he goes, give him a treat immediately after and praise praise praise. Then he can stay out for some playtime before crating him later. This was somewhat similar to the process that I used, although I found that bell training worked best for my little one. Everyone is different and has their own methods that will work best for them. I'm sure you'll get plenty of other advice from members on here. This site is wonderful! |
