I used to always free feed, leave food out, but found it hard to keep track of who was eating what. I now feed in their crates twice a day (morning and night) with a little snack in the early afternoon.
The food bags have suggested amounts for feeding on the package. My dogs (4 months to 2 1/2 yrs) all get 1/4 cup kibble at each feeding. If they don't eat it all, I throw it out, except for the youngest, who needs her food split in smaller servings, so she gets a chance to finish it.
