| 5 months is still young for many. The only way I know of is to catch them pottying in the wrong place and scold them, and when they do it in the right place then praise. I still have one that makes mistakes occasionally. |

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | 5 mo. is still young, but not tooooo young. My Bella is 4 mo. old (+ a wk. or 2), and she uses her piddle pad VERY consistently with only a few mistakes now and then--she's piddle pad trained, not "go outside" trained, though she still will go outside if we're out there and she needs to go. (Btw, I was sitting where you were a couple of months ago because I thought we'd never get her to stop using the carpet, but it did happen!) I'll just tell you what worked for her/us, and you can take it or leave it. To start with, she had to be watched every single second (which got old VERY quickly), and when she wasn't watched she had to be in her crate. I was against crate training at the beginning, but it is SOOOO helpful during potty training--that's when I bought hers, when we started really potty training hard. [Side note: putting her crate in the living room where we are all the time helped immensely. I thought if she saw us, she'd want out to be with us, and that was the case at first, but she cried and squalled a thousand times over worse when she could hear us but couldn't see us.] So, by this time, we had only one pad out in the place we're going to keep it, and we took her to her pad constantly. Anytime we thought she might be sniffing, or it had just been awhile since her last potty, we took her to her pad and waited. And she pretty much had to stay on the pad until she went (unless it had been like 15 minutes or so, and we'd give up and watch for more signs, then go right back). When ever she goes, while she's still going, we said "go potty", so she'd associate that phrase with that action. Then, every time she went where she was supposed to, we made a HUGE deal over it (even if it was after she was forced to stay on her pad for awhile), excited tone of voice, "Good girl", "Yay!", even clapping excitedly. I'm telling you, we made a BIG deal of it. Then she always gets a treat (even now, still). [Side note: Some experts say not to use food as potty training incentives, and some say to always use it. We tried not using treats, but when we started giving her treats after every single potty in the appropriate place it made a big difference. I don't think she cares whether she gets one now or not--she usually potties all by herself and we don't know until later--but she still gets excited when she does. And we make her "sit" or "down" before we give it as an extra little "we're in charge".] In the beginning, she really resisted hard--sitting on her pad forever, refusing to go, then she'd walk right off it and go!! When that started happening, I did employ an old method that most will say you should never do, but it worked for my baby. After a week or 2 of only praise, etc... I started sticking her nose in it, giving her a little spaking, and saying "No ma'am, that is NOT where we potty." Then I'd take her to her pad and make her stay there for a bit. She did NOT like it at all, but it took a few of those before she decided she'd rather just go where she's supposed to. I hated doing it, but..... A lot of people say using that method will make your dog afraid of you, which is why I didn't want to do it in the first place, but my baby is definitely not afraid of me! She kisses me and checks on me to make sure I'm okay when I'm sick, and is ALWAYS glad I'm home, and sticks to me like glue. But, all I have to do is clap loudly and change the tone of my voice for her to know I mean buisness! (usually) Anyway, moral is....doing the above took me all of 10 days or so to get her to potty in the right place at least 98% of the time. She does still have accidents, usually when I'm not paying close attention, but she voluntarily will stop playing and go to her pad when she needs to potty without me having to take her there. And, if she just woke up or we just got home, I can usually day "Do you need to go potty?" There are a lot of times she hears those magic words (because we said them EVERY time she was actually going while we were in training mode), and walks right over and does her business. All that for a 4 mo. old!! I think that's pretty good, considering I know 2 year old Yorkies that aren't potty trained! Yay! Good luck! I hope whatever method or combination of methods you choose work out for you (and your baby) as good as ours did. I do remember thinking in the beginning....she's never going to get it is she? But, she did! And we're both happy! |

Just scolding him in the beggining didn't work as he is a little stubborn furbaby Good luck and be patient. It will take some time but it will also require effort on your part in watching him closely and if you see he's about to go, place him on the mat! Doesn't always work but hey sometimes you have to resort to desperate measures

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | I should also tell you that I tried keeping Bella in her crate in my bedroom at night, but she'd whine VERY early in the morning needing to be let out to go potty. (She just can't hold it that long yet!) After a couple of nights of that, I just decided to try baby-gating her in my bedroom because at night she seemed to do pretty good with going on her pads anyway. That works much better for me and for her, and I think she may have only had an accident in there 1 or 2 times, though those may have been ones I didn't catch from her staying in there during the day. (I work full time, and school just started back up, so my boyfriend has classes again and can't stay with her all the time. So, she stays in my bedroom during the day now too while we're both gone. The reason I chose my bedroom is: I don't have any tile whatsoever in my duplex, it's carpet throughout, yuck!; she's always done good in there in the past; and at night she gets to be with me (sort of) since I don't allow her to sleep with me, and she HOWLS if she is put in another room. I just wanted to add that in case you were wondering what I do with her at night.... |

| keep trying..your puppy will learn soon. I got charlie for christmas..he is 4 months and something wks old. when i first got him, i didn't think he will ever be potty trained. He is doing great now. We have not have any accidents in the house..and if we do have accidents in the house, it is on the pee pee pad only and not on the carpet. We achieved this by crating him..I made a schedule of his potty times and feeding times and play times. We did it for almost two weeks and he got the hang of it. We are still crating him but he gets more playtime now. He only goes in his crate one hr before our schedule potty times. The only problem we have with charlie now is that he is not communicating with us on when he needs to go...he will walk to the door but sometimes get distracted by the shoes and forget that he needs to go..there are times when he goes sit by the door only to want to play outside..we are working on ringing the bell for potty |

| You have to be consistent with whatever method you choose. Zeus is 10 wks old and he knows to go potty outside. I do have to watch him like a hawk at all times when he is out of his ex pen. And, I still wake up two to three times a night to take him outside but it works. He has had the occasional potty accident but I never punish him. If he makes a mistake I just take him outside right away so he can finish if he needs to. Lots of praise when he gets it right. |

| I actually got the idea from a fellow YT member. Here is the pdf that the YT member posted. I changed the schedule a little to fit my needs. http://www.ltah.net/Housebreaking.pdf |

| this is the link to the old thread about potty training problem. My schedule is on this thread.. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...ms-solved.html 5:30am--potty 5:40am--feeding/play time 6am--crate 11:30am--potty time (mom-in-law will take him out) 11:40--play time 12--crate 6pm--potty 6:10pm--feeding/play time 7pm--crate 11pm--potty Charlie did pretty good when we were on the schedule. Now we are off a little b/c he has more play time. Plus for some unknown reason he pee more often than before. So I have to adjust it to whenever he needs to go. If he is in the crate, he will bark to be let out. Otherwise if he is out of the crate, he will stop doing whatever he is doing and walk to the door or else you can tell when he needs to go...sometimes, he doesn't go to the door but will stop playing and sit by my feet. I wonder if his more frequent peeing session is due to his wanting to mark. He is at that age and not neuter yet. Anyways, I am not an expert on this but please let me know if you need any help. |

| I'm definitely no expert, but when I started giving Tiki a small treat immediately after every time she went on a pad along with lots of verbal praise, she caught on pretty quickly. I faded the treats out and then just kept up with the verbal praise and then faded that out too quite a bit. She's been doing on her own fine now for several months (she's 11 mo. old now). Best of luck to you! |
