Therapy Dog Donating Member | YTs Newest Therapy Doggie.... Drum roll please everyone......tah-dah....it's Miss Izzy. Woot! Woot! OMG everyone thanks for all the good YT vibes - Izzy passed her Therapy Doggie Test this morning with flying colors. I was a nervous wreck..hehehe...but she passed all 24 points to the test. There is Part I for Skills and Part II for Aptitude and she tested in a big gym by the hospital where she has never been before and she passed on her first try. Now we have to get the manual and I have to take a test and go to the hospital and take 2 TB tests. Then we get our shirt and Izzy gets her little official bandana to wear. Then we get to go to orientation at the hospital which is near us. Our committment is to visit the hospital at least 2x a month so that is so doable. Can you tell I'm sooooo excited and so very proud of my Izzy.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | WooooooooooooooooHooooooooooooooo! Congratulations, Izzy, and welcome to the YT Therapy Dog Club (there's so many clubs, why not?!) You should be very proud of yourself. Our tester told us that little dogs often have a hard time. And the instructor of a weekend course told us that about 40 percent of all dogs fail. That makes Izzy exceptional! You'll have to let us know how the hospital visits go. I haven't sent off for our paperwork yet because my wife is going to test with Eddie April 12, and we're going to file our paperwork together. Edit: Is the test you have to take a written one? If so, our instructor let us all go over the answers in a group! They're pretty straight-forward, but I still have the answers if you have any questions!

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Thanks Mike it means a lot coming from you!! That's exactly what our instructor told me after the fact (thank goodness he did or I would have been more of a basket case..lol). Out of the 20 they were testing today he said more than likely ony 6-8 would pass. I just ordered the manual from the Delta site on line and then I'll take the test and send in all the paperwork. Hahaha..they said that when I get the bandana I probably will have to have it cut down in size to fit Izzy since she is so small. See Mike all this hard work pays off and now I might get her involved in some agility stuff but not sure yet.

I know what you mean about being nervous. I was like a pageant dad. And they did tell me about the failures beforehand, so I was a basket case.

http://www.deltasociety.org/ To prepare for the test, several obedience schools have classes that train dogs to pass their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. Unless you've been through a lot of obedience classes, I'd recommend something like that. The CGC test is similar to the Therapy Dog test, though not quite as difficult. We skipped CGC class because Eddie had a lot of obedience, but a local hospital offered a two-day seminar to train for the Therapy Dog test. I was glad we did that because it taught us about the Delta Society program too. Then it was just a matter of finding out when the delta society test is being held in your area. You can try the Web site or one of the obedience schools in your area. Good luck

Mike (AlaskaMike) we did the same thing...we are through Delta Organization and we statrted Izzy out with Puppy I and Puppy II training when we first got her with local training (we didn't go through Petsmart but heard that they do training as well). Then we took a class for Canine Good Citizen which really helped us prepare for Therapy Dog testing. We actually took the CGC test but it's really tough and Izzy only passed 8 out of 10. The two she didn't make was greetintg a neutral doggie since she has to stay in a sit position while the neutral doggie and their owner came up to us and did the handshake and Izzy could not move from her sitting position. Well she failed that because she wanted to kiss the other doggie. So even though we didn't pass CGC we had our benchmark on where to go from there so for the last few weeks we've been practicing and when we went today it all worked out for us. So anyone if you are truly interested in becoming a therapy doggie it all starts with training your baby and you can see all the things they need to pass by going to the Delta.org website and seeing all the tests they need to pass. Trust me - they love to train and look forward to it and the little treats they get when they do such a super job. It's all in patience and reward. If anyone wants more info they can PM me or AlaskaMike and we can certainly try to help you out. It's such a rewarding feelilng I can't even describe.
