| Does your family criticize you? I'm upset! I'm interested in breeding yorkies, so I have been trying to attend a show to meet a mentor. I really love yorkies and I want one so badly, that I've been thinking about just getting a pet yorkie first. I was talking to my mom today, and was telling her I want to get a pet first, and she's like "Why not just get one to make money?" It made me so mad! It's like, why have I been reading every book about breading, and trying to meet Bente (mentor)? To make money? I think NOT!!! I feel...almost offended. My bro's lab has had 2 "accidental" litters that the pups were sold and she's just fine with it. "We made money from Rascal(lab). Those people are just fine with their pups. So what if she has litters." BTW-she's still not fixed, and never will be. It just irks me!!! So I TRIED explaining to her: I started my store to make money. You have no idea what happened to those pups. They may be killed, in abusive homes, or are in shelters living in cages. (which I don't doubt) Didn't get it ONE BIT!!! "SO?" UGH!! What do I say? How do I try to inform her that's not the way to breed? I'm so irritated! Sorry for the long post! |

| I know it can be frustrating, but sometimes people won't open their ears to listen. You can talk until you're blue in the face, and they still won't get it. I'm sorry that you're feeling this way. Maybe with time, your mom will understand.

| I had to laugh at your post because I just had a similar discussion with my sister. She truly believes that when it comes to dogs one should just let nature take it's course. Her idea of natural selection, I guess. She seems to truly believe that because dogs are pets we should just let them look whatever way they end up by breeding with whoever they want. Who Knew! My first litter was for me, I was only going to do it once. I can't even describe how much I fell in love with it! Now I breed and I show and someday I hope to teach. My first several yorkies were pets. I learned alot just by owning them. Go to the shows, absorb it all. Find your passion and persue it even if no one else gets it. When you watch that beautiful pup that you bred grow up to be all that you dreamed it would be there is no greater satisfaction. You won't get rich off it anyway so do it for the love.

| do you own a yorkie now? i saw in your post, you wanted to get one as a pet first. all i can say about the breeding is stay with yorkie-talk. definiatly get a mentor. join in on as many (which i know is almost impossible) females whelping as possible. first, second, tenth litters are scary. i have had three litters and each time was different. i absolutly love it and get such a natural high helping with the whelping. if there was a job out there just delivering puppies, i would do it.

| Wow! 1,491 posts and no yorkie? Your restraint is admirable! I agree, some people just don't get it. Do what you feel is best for you (and for yorkies).

| You know it takes alot of time and passion for a subject to gain education. Your Mom obviously isn't educated on all the facts you have so diligently researched. I commend you on what you have done before buying and breeding a Yorkie. Try and educate her on what you have found. Ask her not stand so passive on something until she too has researched. Until then do what you can to keep looking into finding a mentor ect. I too have a deep passion in these areas, but can't find the time I want to go to shows and finding a mentor..I hope too in the next two years. Your a smart person. The Yorkie world needs more of you

| I think by doing all the background research on breeding and wanting to get a yorkie as a pet first to grow into handling them is great. i think this will make you a great breeder if that is what you end up doing. People dont always understand things the way that you want them to, but by doing the right thing and researching it first to know for sure that this is your plan maybe someday your mom will realize how serious you are and that you are doing it for the love of the breed not to make money. Any person getting into breeding just to make money should not be allowed to breed ! (my opinion) I think she should be proud of you ! I did so much research before I got my yorkies for breeding. I am so glad that I did, it will not only educate you with the breed but prepare you for any problems down the road. Good luck and keep your chin up !! All us yorkie talk breeders and owners are here to help you ! |
