| Chance of Pregnancy? I recently bred a maiden female just shy of 3 years old. The male is 3 years and proven. They are almost identical in size, but he is thinner built so weighs less. This is the first time I have used an outside stud service and realizing you never have all the information no matter how long you have been breeding. I guess I have been lucky. Mine have always mated around Day 10, 12, and 14 being supervised but never assisted. On Day 9 brought her to him and she was standing and very compliant. He tried off and on for 2 hours but never penetrated. On Day 10 a repeat of Day 9. She had another female in heat that she did not wish to breed so I think he was stressed over that. On Day 11 I did not feel comfortable leaving my female, but she said I could take the male home. Again they tried periodically and I separated them to rest or when I could not watch 100% of the time. On Day 12, I got a lot closer and more involved and I could see he was aiming high and would stop and rest at the time he should have been penetrating. I adjusted her up a little and one session he penetrated, but then he pulled out (she did not pull away).???? On Day 13, again under close supervision he penetrated and this time I held him in and was able to keep them together for about 2 or 3 minutes before he pulled out. He looked a little swollen upon release, but went back into his sheath within a second or two and I had a wet spot. So this could have been a slip tie. On Day 14, repeat of Day 13, another assisted slip tie. On Day 15, with assistance we got a real tie lasting about 12 minutes. This is the first time the female acted uncomfortable at all, but it was him trying to pull away not her. He was actually using his back legs to push her away ??? so I again held both to keep everyone safe. On Day 16 she is not receptive to him on his own (sits down and growls), but will stand and flag if I am next to her, but he is not interested. What do you think the chances are that she will become pregnant? Have you ever encountered a stud dog with this behavior. |

| I have bred females later in their season and they did get pregnant so there is a good possibility your girl will be pregnant. As for the male, I don't think his behavior is that uncommon. I have had males in the past that were very difficult to breed to some females and easy to breed to others. You just never know. Please let us know if she ends up pregnant and good luck with the whelping if she is pregnant.

| Jazzmine, I recently experienced the identical situation as you. The stud was mounting but was unable to penetrate and he wasn't receptive to assistance. This guy was aiming high, low, left, right, he was all over the place. They were 100% supervised. I even made a ramp to lift him to my female's height but still no tie. The stud was 3 yrs old but not proven. I finally spoke to my vet and we opted for AI on day 16-17. He's optimistic of a positive pregnancy and we'll just see what results. |

| This is my daughter's post so I will update. I was babysitting yesterday and had to take another to a vet appointment and she was going crazy thinking I was taking the other for a walk without her so still thinking she might be pregnant I took her with us for fear of getting her too stressed out. After discussing the first dog, my vet said ok what are we doing with this one and I had to explain why I had brought her. He picked her up and asked how far along and when I said Day 40 he said no way and said he felt her kidneys and a full bladder. I said I wasn't sure one day I would say yes and the other no. He then put her on the exam table and was showing how to palpate and then had to backtrack and tell me she was pregnant with definitely with two and possibly a third higher up. It is still hard for me to believe 100% because she isn't showing at all, but my vet is good. She still has lots of energy on walks and although she feels slightly more solid or thicker in her rib cage area she looks normal below that. Don't know if she is not as far along as I think or being a fit maiden her muscles are in good shape or the puppies are just very tiny or maybe the fact that there is only two??? Time will tell and she will get an x-ray close to the delivery date so she or I will update then. Tiffy girl, Is yours pregnant? |

| Why not erase all doubts and have an ultrasound done? Then you are not doing all this guessing! An ultrasound can be done 3-4 weeks after the dog is bred, and you will be able to know for certain if she is pregnant. On day 58, you have xrays done, and you use that to count puppies and more importantly, measure pelvic ring diameter to determine if she is going to have problems delivering the puppies. |

| Lacy's Mom: we're not confirmed yet. If she is pregnant, today would only be day 21 so we're going to test her on day 28. My vet likes to test further into the pregnancy. She's displaying symptoms of pregnancy, but you can never be certain at this early date. I'll keep you posted. I hope she is!

| Lacy's Mom: I'm sure she's pregnant! There's no way that she is just getting fat! Tites are growing and so is that belly! I took her in for a pregnancy test but that was going to be a waste of money since it's now so obvious that she's pregnant. Instead, an Ultrasound is scheduled for Friday 11/8. According to my calculations she is 28 days and will be due around December 10th. My bitch is from a litter of 6 and so is her dad (I own him too but he's neutered) so I'm hoping for a nice big healthy litter. Will update you on Friday. Have you confirmed a due date yet?

| Lacy's Mom: any babies yet? We're confirmed by ultrasound that my baby girl is expecting 6 pups! She's from a litter of 6 and her dad is from a litter of 5 so I guess genetics dictate a large litter for her. Day 63 is Dec 9th but because of the large litter, she will probably deliver a few days early. Her dad's birthday is Dec 8th and the pups would be a nice birthday gift for grandpa!

| Unfortunately, it didn't take. I actually had an xray done on Day 55 just to be extra safe since the vet said he felt something by palpation at Day 40. I was 99% positive she wasn't but didn't want to risk a singleton puppy not initializing labor. My vet was great he only charged me $21 for the visit and x-ray! TiffyGirl, I am so glad you have four super healthy pups and all went well. Congratulations! |

| Lacy's Mom: I'm so sorry! Try again at her next heat! I see you got my private message to tell you that we whelped 4 pups on 12/2! One girl and three boys! Mom was artificially Inseminated on day 17 and thankfully, it was successful. We're going to have one more litter and then retire her.
