Donating YT 30K Club Member | Looking for feedback on marking with a stud dog My sister recently lost her Irish Water Spaniel and is now looking to get another dog. They miss her so much and her cocker spaniel is lost with out her big sister. We went to a breeder of cavalier king charles spaniels yesterday, my GF has 2 of them and one from this breeder. My sister has shown Briards, IWS and border terriers over the years. After a long visit the breeder offered her a little male who is tracking to be show quality at 5 months, the breeder would co own and have stud rights if everything goes along as planned. Is it possible to have a male unneutered dog with a spayed female and not have them mark? Can you train them? I know once or if he is studded out it may be a different ball game. My sister is seriously thinking of getting him but was a little concerned about the marking. She had a male Briard who she championed who never marked and then she had a border terrier who did. I appreciate any feedback and your time. Thanks

| When we got dexx (our chi) he was about 2-3yrs and unneutered- it's thought he may have been studded either deliberately or accidentally, but he marks terribly! He's been neutered 2 years and still marks!! I've tried everything to get him to stop, and the breeders who own the studs I use all seem to have problems with them marking... Apparently some dogs just can't be stopped, but some only need a week of belly bands and are great! Sorry I can't be more help, and condolences for the IWS... I hope her search goes well!!!

| Unneutered males mark...even unpsayed females...and males used for breeding, marks 24/7...their goal in life is to leave nothing on the face of the earth unpeed on... This is one reason breeders love to find someone who will care for the stud...they use it for stud and it pees in YOUR house. My studs lived separate from the females and were not housepets...they peed on each other, in the food dish, water dish and beds...it is what they do...loved my boys, but I would never own a breeding male for a pet. |

I have placed a number of retired studs...if the owner is willing to go through a bad spell, it always gets better to the point they are really good in the house...but the owner can NOT expect them to adjust in 3 months...might take a full year...I have retired two champions to pet home..they were the only pet and both did excellent until their death...and it gave me such peace of mind to know they had a very specail retirement life.. Females, IMO can be stubborn period!..but I advise belly bands and parlor panties for a year at least... | |
