Need help Please! My pups are 22 days old today. They have been in the whelping box but had started pulling themselves up and over the sides and getting stuck outside so I took some advice on YT and cut a door in the side of the whelping box. The puppies are all walking, their eyes are open and when they have to pee they go outside their whelping box and on the peepee pads (sometimes they miss but they are always close). They have allso started pooping. They are interacting with each other and playing and starting to make barking sounds. I have a soft pad in there for mom to sleep on when she didn't want in the box and the puppies have now claimed this for their own. Mom is still eating 4-5 times per day and free feeding BUT she doesn't seem to want to nurse very often. Is all of this normal? I want to be prepared to start weaning them and from what I have read some start 3-4 weeks and some start 4-5 weeks and there is a variety of what to start feeding. Sorry for the long post I just want to make sure I have healthy babies. (By the way, this was not a planned breeding - Mom was pregnant when I got her) Thanks for any help!! ..shelley

Just walked by the puppies and one of them is up and has his nose buried in Mom's dry food. I took the bowl out, didn't want him choking, and from what I read on here it is too early to start weaning but what do I do. They are sleeping alot in the day and up from about 12pm until now it is 4:39 and they are starting to settle back down. I don't know if they are hungry or what. They are all still gaining weight. At birth they weighed between 3 - 5 ounces and they are all 12 - 16 ounces now.

| Hi Shelley, I have been helping Sara with her puppies since they were a week old. We had to start them on rice cereal with some of their formula when they were about 23-24 days old since mom was not nursing enough and they were hungry. We were up to 3 extra bottle feedings a day and mom was still nursing. All I did was get some Gerber Baby Rice cereal and mix that with their milk and make it a little thicker than their bottle but not thicker than pudding.....does that make sense?? We did that for 3 days and then slowly added in a spoon of canned puppy food and did that for several feedings and each time would add in just a little more. They are now 5 weeks and they get a little canned food, a little rice, a little formula and now ground up hard kibble. We are almost ready to go with just ground up puppy food and stop putting the rest in since they have adjusted so well. I would try adding some cereal to the milk you are using if you also have to bottle feed. The goat's milk recipe is best but these were already on formula and the vet did not want to change them unless they were having problems since they were digesting it without issues. I started out putting the food down 4 times a day and would show them it all. First few tries only a few would take it but after the 2nd day they all were eating and would run when the plate was put down. LOL Now they are eating about 5 times a day and nursing very little. These little ones also got out of their area and we had to get an x-pen for them and yes momma only goes in there to nurse which now is not that often. So from what you are saying yours are doing what they are supposed to also. These ones at 5 weeks weigh between 14 - 21 oz but when we started they were all under 16 oz. Hope this helps!!

about now 21 days old,you should give them access to moistened puppy food. what i do is take a 1//2 cup of food put in bowl with hot water, let it get real soft, takes a while, transfer it to a saucer. put puppies around it. you might have to encourage them, put some on your finger let them lick your fingers. some will take to it quicker then others. they should also have access to dry puppy food & water. also mama will clean up what puppies don't eat.

Thank you both so much - tried the kibble and made it mush and they actually licked some of it!! Most of it off each other but they had a great time. Mom cleaned up the mess and they are absolutely sound asleep!!!!!! I have also put dry kibble and water so they can have it available at all times!! Again --THANK YOU!

Remember everytime you change food to give pups a probiotic such as benebac.....it helps with the good bacteria in the intestines. Don't do too much too soon, their tummies are a bit sensitive... Also, you must take care to insure that mother's breasts do not explode, so the pups do need to continue to nurse on her.

oh yes, they can make a mess but mama takes care of it! feed them 3 or 4 times a day. make sure all the puppies are eating. also i put down an old sheet or towel and put the saucer on it , that way it's less clean up for messy little footprints on the floor and mama isn't licking the floor. just throw it the washer!
