| I had to tube feed the trio... please, some help... And it scared the heck out of me... Luna has very little milk yet, I don't know what to do... I have been trying to syringe and bottle feed the pups since yesterday, but they freak out, and the little girl even scared me to death because she let some milk come out of her nose because she was fighting back... So I took every ounce of the courage left in my little soul and tube fed the pups... they were crying and crying, and Luna was almost dry... I did not give a lot of milk to them, but it seams enough to calm them down... I don't know what else to do, and I am afraid they may dehidrate... man, I am emotionally exhausted... Nobody was online to couch me, so I had to do it all by myself... you have to be proud of me... I never thought I could make it, but I am glad I bought the feeding tubes when I got the whelping supplies... Now, the big question is, should I only supplement the puppies when they don't stop whining, or just set a schedule?? I am afraid if I start supplementing like this, Luna will dry up... but I don't want the pups to be in danger... And, how much should I feed?? they are one week old today, and around 5 oz... they have been gaining weight very slowly, but they have gained... How much should I expect them to gain?? MAN!!!!!!!!!!! Some help here!!! Thanks, and sorry for rambling... is 3:40 AM, and I have not been able to sleep worried sick...

| No one in chat and no breeders online right now that I know of. I just sent some pms to some breeders I know. Hopefully someone will read one and get online to help. What about an emergency vet?

| I would feed them scheduled, but always let them nurse on Mom first. The more they nurse the more it stimulates her milk production. You might weigh them before and after they nurse and see how much they are getting. I know that there are also certain herbs you can give that are supposed to stimulate milk production. I can't remember for sure what they are. You might google it. I am so sorry you are having to go through this, but glad you were able to tube them and had the right equipment. I am proud of you. I have never had to tube feed, but like you have all the supplies ready just in case and researched how to do it.

| I don't have any advice about how much to feed. I agree with Little Bit about letting the pups nurse before you tube feed them, but if mom doesn't have enough milk to support the kids, I would definately take her to the vet and have a physical evaluation done on mom and pups. |

| Ditto about letting them nurse first then do the feeding. I'm sorry i can't help on the tube feeding. I hate it so i don't do it. I use a feeding syringe from the vet and have had good luck with that. The tip is shaped different from a regular needle syringe. Are you making sure Luna is eating a liot of calcuim rich foods? Is she still eating the whelping pudding? |

BANNED! | Definately feed them on a schedule, but let them nurse on mom as this will stimulate her milk production. I usually feed them 1 to 2 cc's every 3 hours, but check with your vet first for their proper amount. Make sure to watch their tummies so you can tell if they are getting full after tube feeding a few times you will know if you need to feed more or less each time. The vet can also give you something to help her produce more milk, however the whelping pudding and some watered down puppy milk usually helps mine start to produce better. As far as how much weight they should gain I wouldn't worry too much about as long as they are gaining your doing good, each puppy will gain at different rates. Great job on tube feeding by the way, you did the right thing! Those puppies needed to be supplimented if they are losing weight. Last edited by tiggerr36792; 06-08-2008 at 06:03 AM. |

| She ate much better yesterday, canned puppy food, chicken broth with rice and vegetables, esbilac... I still syringe water in her mouth because I don't think she is drinking enough... I already spoke with both vets, her vet, and the emergency one... they were no help... her vet said Oh, she will get more, just let the pups try, and the emergency one said oh, just supplement them! I mentioned about me struggling with the bottle and they just said, well, they have to eat... Sooooo, I decided the tube feeding last night after trying for an hour to give them with the bottle, and they were calm the rest of the night... they started to fuss again early this morning, but I sent Luna with them ( I found her on top of my bed, with me very close), and they went calm again... I guess I will be doing it like 3 times a day or so... or as needed... oh and I added a nutridrop on each pup...

| Another question on tube feeding... If I have to start supplementing each time, is it ok to use the tube?? Will it hurt them on the long run?? they make a big issue about it and try to run away, and let you know they hate it... would they get used to it?? sorry, I have never ever had to tube feed, I tried the bottles, but they will not take them... should I give them nutridrops?? once a day?? more often??

| You're doing wonderful. Tubing is a sure fire way to get it in them without the risk of aspirating. There are foolproof ways to be sure it's in the tummy and not lungs. How many days old are they? Regardless, they have to eat. If not they will get dehydrated and hypoglycemic and it's much harder to bring them back from that. The tube will not hurt them. Keep putting them to mom (has her milk come in yet?) and sup. afterwards. Be sure to pinch the tube as you pull it out of babies tummy so you won't get any dripping into the esophagus. Best wishes, Susan |

Will they get used to the tube?? should I keep with the nutridrops?? Or the liver remedy??? do you have any preference for the liquid milk or the one you add water?? I will have to go and buy more today... I had the liquid one... but I guess the other one will hold better... donnow... thanks a lot for the help and support...
