Eddie shows a flash of aggression

I wish I was a behaviorist and could look into Eddie's wee brain and figure out what's going on. Last night at the little-dog meetup, a nice shih-tzu came up to give him a sniff, and he wheeled around and bit him right on the face, leaving a red mark dangerously close to his eye.

I was stunned. Eddie has toy-hoarding issues that I've worked hard on and successfully controlled for years, but there was no toy involved here. The other dog may have been a little pushy, but Eddie overreacted...

Not a REAL dog?

Eddie had his first solo therapy dog visit today. It was at an assisted living home. Lots of elderly. Many with Alzheimer's.

He did great and confirmed my hopes that he'll be good a this. We visited about 20 people in an hour, and he showed no signs of burnout.

The thing I love about this is there's always one highlight that leaves me all warm and fuzzy about the volunteer work. Today, it was a woman who spoke in whispers.

Happy Alaska Anniversary, Rusty

I've had two life-changing events since I joined YT three years ago, and today is the anniversary of one of them.

A year ago today, on Nov. 4, 2007, my wife and I adopted Rusty, our chocolate Lab mix, from YTer MeganS.

Megan has been my bud since I met her here when she was just 12. As those of you who know her can attest, she's mature beyond her years (when she's not being a brat to me). When the Lord was passing out compassion and maturity, he doubled her share....

Eddie's first visit as a therapy dog

Eddie had his first visit as a therapy dog today. It was an unexpectedly long haul for us to get to this point.

I've wanted to get Eddie into this every since he was allowed to visit a relative in the hospital informally. I saw the smiles he brought to the faces of patients, some of whom were terminal. He performed his tricks like a champ and didn't seem to care if those watching were in wheelchairs, on walkers or in bed.

It just seemed like he had something to offer...

In defense of little dogs

I visit another dog forum from time to time in order to broaden my knowledge about dogs in general. There are more big-dog owners there, and I sometimes get information that I can't get here.

Recently, someone there posted a rant about "freaking" little dogs. I bit my tongue for a week and finally decided that the best way to address it was with a blog entry. I thought I'd pass on a version of that here in case others run across the same ignorance and are looking for arguments...
