Special moment on a therapy dog visit

At YorkieTherapy's request, I'm reposting a submission I made to the Delta Society's "Interactions" magazine. It was just a single moment on a visit that reminded me why I love working with Eddie as a volunteer to cheer people up:

All I ever wanted from training my dogs was to keep them from running away from me.

Case of the "dognapped" Yorkie

Now, I can laugh. Eddie is safe, and the only harm is to my pride.

But for 2 1/2 hours this afternoon, my wife and I and 100 or so of friends on Facebook and more here on YT without my knowledge -- not to mention the Anchorage Police and animal control -- were on red alert for the case of the stolen Alaska Yorkie.

I found out today that Jillie has LP in both knees. It was a shock because she hasn't shown any signs of pain or limited mobility. Her knees had been examined a couple times in the past, and no one noticed anything. This time, the vet felt it right away.

She didn't give me a Grade, but since she's had no outward signs or discomfort it's likely considered a Grade 1, though vet did say some dogs with knees like hers will already be in pain. She told me just to watch her, and we'll make...

Nuts about Nose Work

Eddie's been taking Nose Work classes lately. I've written a little about it here, and so has quicksilver. It's the newest dog sport out there, originated by a guy who trains Police K-9 dogs. http://www.funnosework.com

Basically, dogs are taught to find odors. They start by finding a treat tucked in one of several boxes, then they put an essential oil odor in with the treat. In later classes, you remove the treat and the dog finds the odor alone and is later rewarded with a treat....
