Thor's Human Donating Member | White Elephant Exchange? Hey, everybody. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has accumulated a big box of unused toys, uneaten treats, clothing that doesn't fit quite right, etc. I was wondering, would people be interested in combining this with the GE, or having something separate for it? I usually give stuff to my shelter, but I know they are not going to need little booties.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Ha! I'm not totally sure what I'm proposing either. I know that for a GE you are not supposed to send anything used, but maybe in addition to new gifts, we include gently used stuff? Or we open a "garage sale" forum where people who, say, need small crates can open a thread, and maybe someone else has a puppy crate. The recipient pays for shipping. Or maybe we could have a toy rotation thread so dogs get "new" toys every month. I know I usually don't bother to sell stuff, and I don't want to throw it away.

| What fun! We used to do something like that at our family Christmas dinner. I still have the brake shoe that I came home with all those years ago -- and I wonder what the person did with the 50 lb. box of chocolate bars that was my gift I'd love to have a gift exchange where the only $$ you could spend was the shipping. You could send any unused items that you have accumulated, and/or make stuff, but nothing that you bought specifically for the exchange. |

Administrator | We feel it is not in the best interests of participants of the Gift Exchange to receive "used" toys, as we have had issues with that in the past. Feel free to send or sell or give away or trade any used items you may have with other members. |

| What a great idea!!! I really like this idea...Toto has LOTS of stuff that she doesn't really wear anymore...or treats we got that she just was not into... and since she has seemingly outgrown the "toy" phase....we have lots of those on hand extra too! I think this would be great for new little outifts and outgrown carriers...also a way to keep everyones toy chests ever changing! Tell me where to sign up! |

| OK...so we get together....see who wants to participate in the "GENTLY USED" giveaway....and go from there!!! I think that's a GREAT idea....just have to figure out how to equalize it a bit...like say send...so many items to each other...ya know? What do ya think Quicksilver??

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm just the idea gal. I don't do practical! I have a variety of stuff. Like I got this really nice set of muttluks I know Thor will never wear, and I have $0.99 rubber toys he ended up not liking. Maybe we have a daisy chain? One person sends their stuff to another person, and when you get your box, you fill it up with YOUR unwanted stuff, and send it to the next person, etc. Or maybe you post for something you are looking for, say, chew toys, and someone offers to send you some, and it's up to you to find the next link in the chain. You can't get stuff until you've officially said you will send stuff to someone else. OR, we could have some kind of clearing house, where everyone posts what they have, and people can ask for it. Again, you can't ask for stuff unless you are offering extras yourself. Would that work?? Anyone else have ideas? Personally, I am not really worried about the monetary value, but if that's an issue, we could post the rough market value of what we have. Kind of like a giant, virtual garage sale.

I think those are GREAT ideas!!! Should we wait until AFTER this GE to do it...or should we open up a thread in GENERAL and see how many other interested people there are??? I think that YOU should do it....maybe we would get more ideas in General anyhow!! Well obviously there are ALOT of people not involved in the GE that might wanna participate in this!! I don't care about the monetary value either...but just trying to think of all the angles..... We could even post things we have...and trade our items with someone that has something that WE want...as long as we have something that they want....does that make sense? So it would still be two people trading with each other...cuz it would be awfully hard to keep track of it any other way... It would be like a "gently used Exchange"...

Thor's Human Donating Member | I wouldn't mind organizing it, as long as it's okay with admin, of course. The only thing about trading is that one person might feel shorted. I'm thinking you don't really worry about the stuff you're letting go of, and the stuff you get, hopefully you like, but if you don't, you can just send it on down the line. I'm trying to think of a way to make it more personal, or keep the chain length small. Like I have a bunch of clothes I could give away, but it would only make sense to give them to another small yorkie. Or treats - should there be a rule that only un-opened treats get sent, or would we trust people to send bags where only one or two treats were eaten? And then bigger items, like carriers, should only be sent to people who want them.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Okay, here's another idea, though it would need to be different for carriers and larger items: We have a couple of YT boxes that go around: one for clothes, one for toys, and one for treats. You sign up if you want to be in a particular circle. You get the box, pick stuff out of it you want, put your own gently used stuff in it, and mail it to the next person on the list. I imagine a 2x2x2 box would hold a lot of clothing. Or we could have more specific boxes, like Small / Medium / Large Yorkie clothes.

I LOVE that idea!!!!! The larger the box...the LARGER the shipping expense so people will need to know that!!! And like...however many items you take out....you put the same amount of items back in...of your own stuff....what do ya think?

| That way everyone involved has the same NUmber of Options available to them...or they put in at least as many as they take out....they can add more if they want...but we don't want it to go crazy with shipping expenses..

Thor's Human Donating Member | Yeah, like the box always has to have at least five items, but can never weigh more than some reasonable weight. I can't imagine that clothes or toys would weigh that much. But edibles might. I think we keep it casual, so maybe sometimes the box has more stuff and sometimes has less, but we won't be mailing an empty box around. Maybe we start with three basic boxes, and if more people join, we can start splitting stuff out into sizes, boy vs. girl vs. unisex, etc....
