problems with male yorkie #1 about the nail thing, you might want to take him to a groomer like petsmart, petco or even the vet to have his nails trimmed and filed. #2 if he is going to potty on paper you are extremley luckey. Most yorkies take a long time to potty train. Try putting the papers closer and closer to the door if you want him to go and potty outside. move the papers slowly though so that way you won't confuse him. #3 Austin is my male yorkies name if you like to steal it that would be fine with me #4 I have a self feeder and waterer for all of my yorkies. they drink and eat when they want to, but with a puppy take all food and water and put it up out of his reach while you are at work and put it back down when you get home from work that way he doesn't potty everywhere while you are at work. anymore questions feel free to ask I will try my best to help. I had to learn the whole breeding thing and the puppy thing on my own so I will be glad to help with whatever Last edited by michelle0280; 09-17-2006 at 11:28 PM.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and Congratulations. Make sure you get the nails trimmed soon they can get caught on things and hurt your baby. ALso make sure he is eating well and give him Nutrical at 8 weeks he is still very young to be away from Mom so you need to take over. Eating is the most important thing at this age to prevent him from going hypoglycemic (low blood sugar). You will love it here and will be able to get alot of help,

1 - The nails might look fake to you because yorkies have dark nails. It's tough to determine how far to cut them down b/c of this. I suggest you get them done professionally at first. Perhaps ask the groomer to show you the proper technique. But please do get them cut down if you think they're getting long. I know at Petsmart it's only $8. 2 - OMG CONGRATS ON THIS!!!! My guy is 6 months old and is just now getting the hang of potty on the pads. Thank your lucky starts. 3 - Hmmmm... post some pictures of him. It would be tough to name him without seeing him! If you need help posting pics, send me a PM. Or if you don't have a digital camera maybe you could tell us some things about you and your fiance so we could help with a cute name. 4 - For the feeding: what type of food are you feeding him? There are many, many threads on here about food. I think most of us feed Chicken Soup, Merricks or Nutro. There should be guidelines on the bag for you. That's what I usually follow. Good luck with your new puppy.. and we certainly don't mind the questions!

Abbi Rose 4 weeks Wednesday Hello everyone, Could someone please help me? Molliemae seems to be weaning Abbi Rose sometimes and other times she is feeding her. I gave Abbi baby food as recommended and a tiny bit of Nutristat. When does the Mom stop cleaning their poop. Abbi pees on the paper, but I have only seen her poop once. She seems okay except wanting her Mama. Molliemae will go back to her, and seems to be feeding and cleaning her. Does the Mom continue to clean them when she is feeding them? I am very confused. Should I keep feeding her baby food? Please help. Thanks so much. Jan

Congrats on your new baby! Here's what I think as far as helping you. 1. I agree his nails may need to be trimmed...I went to pet mart and asked for the most exsperienced groomer there...CAll aheads! 2. I'm so glad the paper training is going well... It took my pup a month to get trained but he has only had 1 accedent this past month. Isn't it great! 3. It took a week for us to name our little one... take your time and try it out for a day to make sure you like it. 4. My yorkie was 12 weeks when I got him and I feed him 3 times a day. But if yours is only 8 weeks I would think he needs a bit more... I would say ask your vet but I'm guessing about every 4 hours. Chewy only ate about a tablespoon at a feeding if I could get him to eat even that. He is a picky eater and it isn't easy. I would sometimes have to feed him by hand. After they get older they are not at risk of getting hypoglycemic shock so you don't have that worry. Feed him as much as you can in a feeding... I left food and water out all the time. As for when you leave the house... I crate chewy. I have a water bottle that hooks to the crate and it has the ball in it (Like a rabit water bottle) so he can have water any time he needs it. I also leave dry food to munch on) I would never take the water away. I think it is very important to let them drink any time they need it. Even at night. Chewy has never gone potty in his crate. I hope this helps... I would call the vet and check about the amount and how often he should eat. God bless you ad your little one... We want to see pics when you can!!!

At 8 weeks I still feed at least 3 times a day. I put the dry kibble in a food processor, add a teaspoon of canned and warm water so I know they are eating. I feed whatever they will eat in 15 minutes and then discard the rest and adjust the amount as needed. Feeding frequent meals is the best way to prevent hypoglycemia. I also leave out dry kibble and water at all times. Leaving an 8 week old puppy without food or water "while you are at work" as one poster suggested is not advisable - that is way too long for him to go without food and water. All of my puppies start using the pads right away. Be careful though because you will be allowing him more freedom than the breeder did and he will regress on his training if not kept in a smaller area until older. I suggest a sleeping kennel with door open placed inside a fenced playard area with room to eat and play while you are not watching him. If you just clip the nail tips barely (puppies usually have a little hook part that curls under so you can just catch that with the clippers - sorry, hard to explain) with regular human nail clippers that should stop them from catching immediately and it will also get him use to having his nails clipped.

Abbi Rose Abbi is will be 4 weeks old this Wednesday. Molliemae fed her about an hour ago and now she has left her alone in the crate. I am so worried. I tried giving her more baby food, she licked a very small amount off of my finger and then turned her head. She is sleeping now. I tried the Esbilac and she wouldn't take it. I am calling the vet tomorrow and see what they recommend. I had a very hard time with my vet because Molliemae gave birth to two pups. One was breech and they couldn't get it out. They sent me to the ER vet and Molliemae had the little breech pup on her own, but it was dead. Then, she had Abbi. Thanks for any information you can give me. Sincerely, Jan

Sorry, you had a bad experience and lost one. At 4 weeks, abbi should be being fed 4 times a day. Don't leave wet food out for more than 20 minutes because of the risk of bacteria. Discard what the pup doesn't eat or let the Mom finish what is left. By 6 weeks they can usually start eating dry food which I leave out all the time, but still continue to feed the wet meals. Put a quality dry puppy food in a food processor or blender and turn it into a powder. It's not necessary that it be powdered, but it is a lot quicker to mix since you don't have to wait for the pellets to soften which takes a while. Mix the powderized dog good, a teaspoon of canned and warm water, stir well and make a soupy gruel. The consistency should be something she can lick up, more than chew. I think you will be amazed at how much she enjoys it. I put it in something with a very low rim, dip my finger in it and let them lick it off and that is all it takes. I start adding less water when I see they are not having any constipation problems. It's normal for Moms to not let them nurse all the time at this stage. She will probably continue to nurse several times a day, but will put her on a schedule. She just doesn't want the puppy hanging on her all the time. Definitely start feeding Abbi the gruel though. Mom's will usually clean up the poo until you start feeding them. I am sure she is pooping and Mom is just eating it, but that will stop in the next couple of days.

Abbi Rose Oh God Bless You for replying so soon. I am going to do this. I know poor little Molliemae is so worn out. She is tiny herself. If I can live through this with them, I am having Molliemae spayed. Cody, my little male is the Dad. He is adorable too. I could never be a breeder. I cannot believe how much they feel like your children. We have been through it and I can't imagine anything happening now with Abbi. Thank you, thank you, thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Jan P.S. As soon as I can figure out how to, I am going to post pictures of my babies. I truly love them so much.
