what do you think? CODE OF ETHICS . . 1) A breeder-member shall strive to conform to the Yorkshire Terrier Standard as approved by the American Kennel Club, to improve progeny, and to reduce faults to a minimum. weight "must" not exceed 7 pounds. Approved April 12, 1966 "As with all purebred dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club, there is an approved breed standard for Yorkshire Terriers. This standard of perfection is a written description of how the ideal Yorkshire Terrier should look. Yorkshire Terriers with deviation from that standard should not be bred.

| Akc AKC will allow any two AKC sire and dam to be used for breeding. Quality is not a factor..the standard is not a factor...but as a breeder we decide what type breeder we will be...will we breed to the standard to produce a dog as much like the standard as possible, to insure the Yorkie will stay a Yorkie..or will we ignore it and produce what suits our fancy? We would have to change the name of this forum to.. "Something similar to a Yorkie Talk"... AKC can not regulate ethic's..nor should they..that is up to the breeder to decide for themselves. |

If I produce a Yorkie that will be over 9 lbs which hasn't happened yet, I would sell it for pet, spay/neuter at a reduced pet price. The AKC and Canadian KEnnel Club will accept any registeration a breeder submits with no mention of the quality of the dogs involved in the breeding. In fact, an unscrupulous breeder could register a pup that is not actually a product of the mating on the papers and no one would be the wiser -- unless there is a suspicion and the registry asks for a DNA proof that this was the sire and dam. That is where your homework comes in before you buy a pup whether it be for pet or what you want for breeding. Immersing yourself in the breed doesn't mean you buy something called a Yorkie no matter what it looks like and breed it to whatever you think you like ignoring the breed standard and what a Yorkie is supposed to look like. This is true no matter what purebred breed you are talking about.

The closest you may ever want to go is a female bred back to a grandfather and that would also depend on what you are seeing in the pedigree and what kinds of health problems there have been if any, in the previous 5 generations. If you inbreed, are you willing to be sure your puppy buyer understands the risks, are you willing to refund purchase price if the pup ends up with health problems due to the inbreeding? and what if you are in a 'lemon law' state? You could be paying a lot of money out if the pups are not healthy.

| Big girls Is there a correlation between size and the ability for the ears to stand up? Seems most larger yorkies have dropped ears. . . am I imagining things? Jodi |

| ears Most oversized Yorks do have down ears..but I have seen some smaller ones also, especailly if they have heavy ear hair that is not trimmed..and that can break the cartiledge over time so they never stand... It is a recessive trait and both parents must carrier the gene. The larger York tends to have very heavy ear leather making it almost impossible to stand erect. I had a small girl brought to me for grooming some years back...she had not been professionally groomed in the past...her ears were very heavy with hair and flopped over. I trimmed the ears and they popped right up...the owner had asked for a short body clip also...when she returned she refused to believe it was her Yorkie...she got nasty with me and I had to take her into my dog rooms and show her all my dogs...that rotten little Yorkie refused to even look at the owner, let alone come when she called her name...LOL Finally, she took her to her vet for her micro-chip to be read...I never met a Yorkie I didn't love and enjoy visiting with..BUT some owners made me nuts!!! LOL |

| Jodiodeeo, I'm sorry this is happening on your thread. I tried to take it private but you see what has happened. I was gone for 2 days not because I couldn't take the heat but because I was in the hospital for a procedure. Anyways you asked for a larger puppy and I won't continue to debate Yorkie breeder policies on your thread. Again, I'm sorry. Sylvia |
